Job Summary:

The Sustainability Resources & Waste Diversion Coordinator position is a new role within Facilities Management that will play an integral role in finding and applying funding for various sustainability initiatives at CU Anschutz, as well as providing education, marketing, outreach, and training on waste diversion efforts across campus. This full-time role will work under the supervision of the Sustainability Manager to identify specific funding needs for energy and water efficiency, renewable energy, transit, and employee education programs that will assist the University in meeting its climate change goals and natural resource use reduction efforts. The role will also work closely with Facilities Support Services, the Green Labs Coordinator, and constituents across campus to identify ways of increasing recycling & composting efforts in educational and research facilities.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to identify potential grant sources and opportunities that are consistent with the needs of the CU Anschutz Facilities Management & Planning. The candidate will also research grant opportunities, prepare persuasive and articulate proposals with supporting documentation, develop budgets, and identify and analyze data for specific projects. The position will also research and form relationships with foundations, government entities, and corporations to solicit significant awards in support of climate mitigation efforts.

Under the direction of the Sustainability Manager, this position assists with the development, implementation, and administration of campus-wide sustainability programs and/or projects in distinct areas of specialty focused on waste diversion, and will assist with water conservation, energy initiatives, green building, education & communication, and alternative transportation. Works across campus departments and external entities while promoting and advancing sustainability programs for the University.

Supervision Received:

Reports to the CU Anschutz Sustainability Manager and will periodically perform tasks for Facilities Management & Planning leadership.

Duties:

40%  Grants Coordination:

  • Work with the Sustainability Manager and Facilities Management & Planning staff to identify specific projects with funding needs.

  • Research state, federal, and other options for grant funding opportunities. Must become familiar with funding opportunities provided by the State of Colorado Energy Office, Colorado Department of Health & Environment, Colorado Department of Natural Resources, US Department of Energy, US Department of Transportation, and other entities as required.

  • Draft, edit, compile, proofread, and submit persuasive grant proposals to foundations, government agencies, and corporations.

  • Develop standard grant templates, write grant reports, produce written reports for renewal, and cultivate potential and existing grantees.

  • Coordinate with the Sustainability Manager and Office of Grants and Contracts on deadlines, timing of submissions and requests as well as information sharing

  • Interface with all departments as they relate to development in collaboration to complete grants.

50%  Waste Diversion Efforts:

  • Work with waste contractors, consultants, and waste diversion partners, providing services or support for campus programs, including coordination and daily communication with the Facilities Support Services, janitorial staff, and waste haulers.

  • Explore new opportunities for waste diversion, including, but not limited to, a circular economy, a sustainable purchasing policy, reuse programs, and construction and demolition waste.

  • Work with special event staff, event organizers, and contractors to further the University’s sustainable event programming.

  • Monitor and compile waste diversion metrics regularly and communicate progress through annual reporting.

  • Support for waste diversion grant applications and familiarity with state and regional grant programs

  • Coordinates with other local governments and agencies on solid waste and recycling issues. Attends regional collaboration meetings to remain current on waste diversion issues.

  • Assists with the implementation of sustainability programs and strategic planning initiatives, which include oversight of contractors or vendors commissioned for services, tracking and analyzing data and metrics, evaluation of existing programs, grant applications, and research of sustainability topics.

10% Education and Outreach

  • Develop educational and promotional content for use across campus.

  • Present to various campus leadership and governance groups, and other organizations across campus on waste diversion best practices and university efforts.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Environmental  Science, Biological Science, Physical Science,  Communications, Business, Public Administration, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
  • 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in sustainability that includes grant research and writing proposals

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in environmental science or a sustainability-related field
  • Experience with Waste Diversions efforts, including recycling, composting and e-waste
  • Experience with philanthropic, federal, and state grants.
  • Experience with sustainability oriented educational outreach to diverse communities (presentations, marketing or similar)
  • Experience with Community Based Social Marketing (CBSM)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of federal, state and non-profit grant resources
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental sustainability principles and practices
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret reports, metrics and data
  • Ability to write accurate, compelling narratives that uses grammar and spelling correctly
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Excellent speaking, presentation, and general communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $75,000-$85,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
