Description of Work Unit
The Colorado Stormwater Center is housed under the One Water Solutions Institute (OWSI) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) to provide technical training, rigorous research innovative technologies that promote collaboration between CSU and outside partners such as local governments, private sector/industry members and non-profit organizations. OWSI is home to several national research centers with specific efforts underway to address a variety of water sustainability challenges. The Colorado Stormwater Center provides technical training, education, and research opportunities with the goal of maintaining and improving the health of lakes, rivers and streams through proper stormwater management. The CEE Department at CSU is recognized both nationally and internationally for its education, research, and service and outreach programs, and is ranked in the top 40 of such programs in the USA. The CEE Department consists of 36 tenured and tenure- track faculty, 16 research scientists/scholars, 27 research associates, and 11 administrative professionals. Position Summary
The One Water Solutions Institute (OWSI), in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado State University, (CSU) is seeking a qualified stormwater engineer to provide research expertise and conduct professional training activities for OWSI’s Colorado Stormwater Center (OWSI-CSC) at CSU.
This position will be co-located at both the CSU Fort Collins and Spur Denver campuses, with the option to locate entirely at the CSU Spur Denver Campus. This position will serve as the lead stormwater engineer for the OWSI-CSC which duties includes: Conduct official training and certification activities for the Center (in-person workshops, online courses and annual symposium); Develop new projects: writing technical proposals, developing contacts for potential new clients, and presenting innovative solutions developed by the OWSI team to the public and other professionals; Manage current projects: assume responsibility for project quality, scheduling, project finances and project products/deliverables; Create and execute project and program work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements; Clearly communicate project goals and objectives to other personnel involved in the project(s); Extensively collaborate with the OWSI team internally as well as with external partners through other related OWSI projects and CSU Spur programs; Demonstrate team-building behavior that sets a positive example for integrity, fiscal responsibility, and professionalism and contributes to an enthusiastic atmosphere.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree with a focus on Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stormwater Management, Urban Water Systems, Water Resources Sustainability, or closely related field(s)
  • Two or more years of experience conducting stormwater projects and efforts related to urban stormwater systems, green infrastructure, and/or stormwater drainage or closely related fields
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; The department will not sponsor a visa for this position. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the proposed start date. 
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Experience of conducting education and outreach activities related to urban stormwater-management or closely related topics including development of training materials and technical documents
  • Experience with fiscal and programmatic management
  • Experience preparing and submitting grant proposals to local, state, and federal agencies and/or non-profit organizations
  • Demonstrated capacity for working in large interdisciplinary teams and collaboratively leading program development efforts
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated experience in conveying information through presentations, webinars, websites, factsheets, formal reports or technical documents to a variety of audiences. Emphasis on MS office suite.
  • Bilingual experience to translate communication materials to diverse audiences

  • Conduct official Colorado Stormwater Center training and certification opportunities throughout the year
    • Lead or co-lead stormwater training and education events in person and online; prepare and present material suitable for a variety of audiences (professional, public) with differing levels of experience in stormwater management practices; develop new course material for stormwater training and certification events
  • Coordinate and organize the annual Colorado Stormwater Symposium; develop and pursue funding opportunities in support of this event
  • Conduct community outreach and education activities to promote innovative solutions developed by the Center and OWSI in both the public and professional spheres
  • Administer and maintain online certification (asynchronous) courses and learning modules through CSU online
  • Curate and maintain content for the Center’s online presence including website, social media, event advertisements, and online courses/certifications

  • Carry out research projects that include water sampling and quality testing, measurement of hydraulic and hydrologic parameters for stormwater control measures and receiving water bodies

  • Work with local organizations (municipalities, water providers, nonprofits, stormwater professionals) and community members to identify research needs that will help address community stormwater issues
