Let’s Go Outside! Urban Explorers - Girls STEAM Academy is sponsored by Texas Parks and Wildlife’s Department (TPWD) COOP Grant in collaboration with University of Houston-Downtown, Aldine ISD, and Klein ISD.  The primary focus of this program is to bring middle school female students into the outdoors, promote environmental science stewardship, and increase awareness and interest in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (S.T.E.A.M). fields.  Camp Counselors will work with our Adventurers on four (4) overnight excursions where we will engage in Interpretive Programming offered by the parks as well as team building, skill-building, and S.T.E.A.M. related activities at the campsite.

DUTIES 

  • Leads and implements camp programs for children (middle school females)
  • Supervises adventurers and ensures their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being
  • Maintains a schedule for camp participants
  • Organizes and leads various small and large group activities
  • Ensures the cleanliness of the site
  • Assists in maintaining accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and attendance
  • Mediates campers’ disputes

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 

  • Enjoys being in the company of children
  • Leadership, communication, patience, problem-solving, and organization skills
  • Photography skills
  • Must be able to carry heavy loads and travel uneven terrain
  • Knows and understands all emergency procedures associated with the Let’s Go Outside! Urban Explorers Girls STEAM Academy

Qualifications

 
  • Previous experience in a camp, youth program, recreation, working with children, or in a related field

 

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • University student in the Dept. of Urban Education – Educator Preparation Program who has completed some field-based experiences
  • First AID/Lifeguard certification
