Summary of Duties:

The College of Medicine Learning Specialist leads, supervises, and provides individual and group learning support to MD students in all four years. This includes support for needs related to the pre-clerkship curriculum, clerkship curriculum, as well as national board exam support. The Learning Specialist develops and identifies tools and resources to assist students in their learning of medical and clinical knowledge. The Learning Specialist will collaborate with the WSU Spokane campus Student Success office to assist in connecting medical students with student tutors and reasonable accommodations. This position reports to the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs but works closely with the Associate Dean for Accreditation, Assessment, and Evaluation.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of full-time academic advising experience in a college or university or related experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional academic advising experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis. Positions who will lead or supervisor will require one or more years of full-time experience leading or directing the work of others.

Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a diverse environment.
  • Experience advising/counseling students or trainees.
  • Experience or knowledge of coordinating student services or related programs.
  • Experience analyzing, evaluating, using professional judgment and/or applying a comprehensive depth of knowledge of student issues.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous work experience with students in health professions or other, similar setting.
  • Master’s degree in related field.
  • Previous work experience at an institution of higher education.
  • One or more years of experience advising/counseling students in a higher education setting or equivalent.
  • Experience working with diverse faculty, students and staff.
  • Familiarity with Washington State University academic rules and regulations.
  • Professional experience related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of academic programs and strategic planning at college.

Monthly Salary: Minimum: $4,061.90, Midpoint: $5,077.36, Maximum: $5,585.10; commensurate with qualifications and experience.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
