Job Summary:

This position is responsible for all aspects of human resources administration related to the Department of Pathology.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to recruitment, appointment, dismissal, the annual performance evaluation process, and maintenance of personnel files and leave utilization records of all staff in the Department of Pathology.  This position is also responsible for all recruiting and onboarding activities in conjunction with the HR Shared Services representative. The Human Resources Principal Professional is responsible for determining the organization’s staffing needs and ensuring consistent interpretation and implementation of administrative and human resource policies and procedures throughout the department. 

This position must remain current on policies and procedures for the above tasks and ensure compliance with all Department, University, state, and federal guidelines.  The individual in this position will provide education and advice to leadership related to staff and faculty employment and compliance including documentation and initiation of discipline and discharge procedures and work in concert with HR Shared Services at the University of Colorado. The individual in this position will provide assistance in personnel issues under the guidance of the Department Chair, DFA, and Vice Chairs.

Key Responsibilities:

Recruitment 40%

  • Manages all aspects of recruitment, appointment, performance coaching, dismissal, and the annual performance evaluation process for departmental staff. Prepares and maintains job descriptions and performance expectations.  Implements a fair and consistent compensation and performance evaluation program, adhering to University of Colorado policies.
  • Job Evaluation 10%
  • Analyzes positions, assigned job responsibilities, and the needs of the department.  Makes recommendations regarding the addition or elimination of positions, balancing of work responsibility assignments and compensation.

Employee Relations 5%

  • Provides training, assistance, and direction to supervisors regarding employee relations issues, staff mediation, conflict resolution and, if required, progressive discipline.  Serves as a consultant to staff and faculty on human resources issues to increase competence on personnel issues and decrease liability for the department. Research complex issues and seek guidance from the University of Colorado as needed.

Policies and Compliance adherence and Development 5%

  • Evaluates, prepares, and updates the department’s policies and provides consultation to Chair and DFA or other senior faculty in the management of human resources. Examples include, but are not limited to, extended leave approval, sabbaticals, mediation, conflict resolution, contract violations (letters of offer, UPI member practice agreements, outside compensation, etc.) and, if necessary, progressive discipline. Consults on behalf of the department with human resources, Faculty Affairs, Dean's Office, and/or University legal counsel.

Payroll Functions 25%

  • 25% Oversee payroll functions, including managing FMLA, and maintaining FTE and allocation changes, providing information to HRSS or department finance staff for making changes in HCM.
  • Project management 15%
  • 15% Prioritizes duties and balances responsibilities to ensure an efficient service delivery system and adherence to program guidelines.  Improves program operational efficiency through organization, increased communication, dissemination of information, application of work standards, and tracking mechanisms. Identifies projects that may not be on track or for which due dates are approaching. Sends reminders, schedules meetings to address issues, takes initiative to implement processes to prevent compromised customer service or missed deadlines.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, business administration, finance, accounting, education, social sciences, healthcare administration, public administration, communications, information systems, or a directly related field from an accredited institution and three (3) years of professional level experience supporting leadership in an administrative capacity.
  • The position requires extensive, diverse, and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for general human resources functions, as well as supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five+ (5) years’ human resources management experience; preferably in a higher education, medical school or health sciences setting.
  • Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts as they relate to human resources functions
  • Demonstrated process improvement experience and experience using technology to streamline processes..

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally with senior level faculty, campus and school administrators, and staff, including presentation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

Anticipated Salary Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $59,073 - $75,141

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
