Job Summary:

An Assistant Research Professor position is available for a computational biologist in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology. The Department of Immunology and Microbiology hosts approximately 62 primary faculty with grant-funded research laboratories. The primary responsibility in this position is to be the primary computational biologist for the faculty in our department who require computational analysis or expertise on their projects.  Additionally, a large of component of this position requires development of computational biology course materials and to teach our graduate students wet-lab study design for NGS studies and computational analysis. The successful candidate will foster collaborations between participating researchers within the department and across multiple departments of various disciplines across campus.  Due to the nature of the position, a successful candidate will be able to multi-task several projects, manage deadlines, and have excellent communication skills. 

Key Responsibilities: Direct and develop computation biology courses for our graduate students, be the primary analyst for the department for data that requires computational analysis, provide input and expertise to faculty with grant proposals requiring computational support, help manage genomic data repositories and data transfers, develop code, pipelines, and a new software as needed to support the department.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
 

  • PhD in the life sciences, computational biology, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of laboratory wet benchwork experience in the biological sciences 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in and collaborating with an academic shared resource core laboratory
  • Record of productive collaborative research and publications
  • Proficiency in shell/bash and R
  • Strong teaching record and demonstrated ability to communicate complex computational biology concepts to graduate students and faculty across various disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze various types of NGS analyses such as GWAS/PheWAS, bulk RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, variant calling, neoantigen analysis, ATAC-seq,  VDJ repertoire analyses, TN-seq, metagenomics, dual RNA-seq, across different organisms such as human, mouse, and various bacterial and viral species.
  • Proficiency in multiple coding languages separate from the above such as Python, GoLang, Java, etc...
  • Extensive experience in version-controlled biological computational analysis and coding as demonstrated by the use of online code repositories such as GitHub or Bitbucket
  • Experience building and managing software containers using Docker, Singularity, and Apptainer for reproducible research 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Extensive experience and expertise in proper wet-lab study design as it relates to next-generation sequencing projects and analysis
  • Familiarity with NGS library preparation processes and quality control methods at the wet-lab level
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment and ability to communicate at the interdisciplinary level, particularly between statisticians, biologists (primarily immunologists and microbiologists), computer scientists, and wet-lab scientists
  • Excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple priorities and concurrent projects
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance, particularly as it relates to human genomics data and NIH data management plans

    Anticipated Pay Range:

    The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

    $85,000 - $92,000

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
