Job Summary:

This permanent full-time position in the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, Department of Pathology, to be based at the University of Colorado Hospital in the Department of Pathology Anatomic Pathology laboratory and practice. This position will serve as an attending academic anatomic pathologist, will practice as part of subspecialty pathology teams in cytopathology and surgical pathology.  As an academic pathologist, clinical work will include teaching residents and fellows using case based and didactic methods, as well as scholarly activities. Given the acute nature of the work, night and weekend call in rotation with other attending pathologists will be required.

The academic appointment, at rank of Assistant Professor, requires the candidate to have significant medical training and experience with demonstrated expertise in anatomic pathology, teaching and scholarship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 80% Attending Pathologist based in the Department of Pathology Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology based at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH), Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC), Aurora, CO. This includes case based sign out in surgical pathology as well as cytopathology, rotating with other attending physicians (typically 32-34 weeks per year) as well as intermittent after hours call for frozen sections,  clinical consultation to peers in pathology, and fulfilling the responsibilities of covering Multidisciplinary Conferences (MDC), participating in hospital or departmental committees, or mandatory meetings of faculty in pathology.
  • 10% Engage in teaching activities, including small and large group didactic conferences, one on one teaching of medical students, residents and fellows. This includes joining faculty of residency in pathology, as well as fellowships in surgical pathology and cytopathology. As a teaching physician, you must participate in the review, evaluation, and subspecialty education of clinical trainees. As a PhD, you may also choose to participate in the review, evaluation and teaching of graduate students associated with departmental labs or programs.
  • 10% Engage in scholarship, as broadly defined in the matrix of the University of Colorado School of Medicine. You are not expected to acquire external funding, however, you may participate in funded research and also apply for pilot funding through Department of Pathology and other programs.·          

Work Location:

Onsite – The position is 100% on site, without the ability to cover anatomic pathology clinical service from off campus or at a distance with the exception of consultation in unique cases after hours.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  • Board certified in anatomic pathology and cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology.
  • Must demonstrate excellence and experience in both surgical pathology and cytopathology, and have completed GME accredited fellowships in both areas at the time of hire.
  • In cytopathology, the successful candidate must have significant experience in ROSE (rapid on site evaluation) in the procedure room or operating room, and have experience in working with the proceduralist to ensure that the appropriate work up sampling is enacted at the time of the FNA or core biopsy he/she attends. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Residency and fellowship training at complex academic centers are preferred, given the complexity of surgical pathology and cytopathology cases that come to our quaternary care based practice.
  • A history of research or other academic degrees, experience in molecular pathology or genetics are preferred.
  • Candidates must have a mentor and a plan, that will facilitate career development within the department and in their clinical areas of expertise.
  • In surgical pathology the candidate should have subspecialty interest and be willing to practice on subspecialty-based teams with colleagues, rather than in general surgical pathology.
  • The candidate must also have significant expertise in the performance and teaching of FNA methods, and be willing to perform biopsies in the departmental clinic or at the patient bedside, with trainees in attendance.
  • Experience in lab management and Informatics are preferred.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$220,000 to $240,000
