Job Description

The Assistant Librarian, under direction, analyzes clientele needs, interprets library resources, and facilitates their use by students, faculty, support staff, and other members of the academic community. Maintains knowledge of library technology, resources, copyright, and other issues/ trends in the library to provide information to users. Primarily works in the area of reference, but may perform tasks in one or more functional areas within the Library.


Responsibilities:

  • Facilitates the use of library resources, including the online library catalog, electronic databases, print and non-print indexes, abstracts, reference materials, and online and Internet resources.

  • Conducts clientele interviews to recommend effective and appropriate information resources.

  • Participates in the implementation of Library policies and procedures.

  • Responds to escalated requests for assistance and more complex, non-routine resource questions as a subject matter expert. Refers to sources, places, and individuals when local sources are insufficient.

  • Ensures and meets the mission, goals, and objectives of the Library and University.

  • Maintains knowledge of library technology applications, resources, copyright, and other issues/ trends in the library.

  • Provides explanations and instructions for department/unit employees. Provides support for a range of in-depth, specialized questions in research resources and databases. Offers advanced customer service, including using virtual reference and chat support venues for library users.

  • Creates and edits departmental publications, as requested.

  • Provides staffing for the research help desk during evening and weekend hours as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education – Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience – No prior experience required.  

Preferred Requirements:

Experience – Two years in an academic library, public library, specialized library, archive, or other related educational setting. Professional library experience preferred.

Supervision Received/Given  

This position has limited supervision of employees during scheduled evening or weekend hours. Unexpected issues will be communicated to the assigned manager in a timely manner.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements – Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items. Ability to handle material which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores.

Scheduling Requirements - Work beyond normal office hours and on weekends.

Hours: Up to 10 hrs/week

Salary: $22/hr

This is NOT a remote position. The selected candidate will be required to work on campus.
