Job Description

Being a part of Wellness at ASU as the Assistant Director for Sport Clubs means uniquely engaging in our mission of building an ASU student community that embraces the physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being of self and others as a hallmark of the Sun Devil Experience. We do this through the Sun Devil Way, exemplifying; achievement, engagement, and responsibility.

As an integral part of Wellness at ASU, the engagement team is leading the way in providing personalized frameworks for students to establish and maintain positive health habits at ASU and beyond. We do this by assessing student health and wellness needs, providing a variety of programs, and building environments that promote healthy living, decision-making, and student engagement for students to ultimately be better equipped to succeed in their academics, career, and in their personal lives. This person will be responsible for taking a leadership role in cultivating, creating, and ensuring student engagement in community building, well-being, and skill building of all ASU students as well as instilling institutional affiliation and college pride.

The Assistant Director for Sport Clubs and serves as an integral member of the Wellness @ ASU team and although it serves all four locations, it is primarily located at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex-Tempe.  As a member of the Sun Devil Fitness Complex Team, this candidate must be able to work from a one-university model of practice, focusing on the implementation of programming across locations.  The Assistant Director will report to the Senior Associate Director. This position is responsible for developing student employees into student leaders, through ongoing training, assessment and development of student staff.  The Assistant Director for Sport Clubs works in a team setting to deliver programs and services across ASU’s four campuses in the Metro Phoenix area.

Essential Duties

Sport Clubs Job Duties:

  • Lead the sport club program that supports 60 student-run sport clubs with up to 1,500 student-athletes.
  • Directly supervise 1 full- time staff member and support 1 Student Coordinator and the Sport Club Leadership Board.
  • Administer travel requests and reimbursements through Concur
  • Manage a comprehensive onboarding and training program for all volunteer sport club coaches (~70 coaches)
  • Create and manage an operational budget, adidas apparel budget, and Student Government allocated budget, utilizing budget forecasting to determine annual projections and allocations.
  • Oversee the management of the organization of club registration, member registration using DSE and scheduling of all home games, performances and tournaments.
  • Utilize principles of growth mindset when facilitating student growth and development, when training sport club leaders and student staff.
  • Assist in the strategic planning process of the sport club program and kids’ camps across all four locations.
  • Create dynamic and unique programming that promotes student community and meets the changing needs of the ASU student body.
  • Utilize SMART goals planning in developing goals and expectations with students.
  • Develop a system for training methodology for student staff, sports club officers, and sport club coaches.
  • Enforce program and facility protocol consistently, and ensure accountability to risk management practices.
  • Perform program assessment and evaluation each semester to determine the ongoing needs of students within the program.
  • Maintain flexibility through utilizing critical thinking, and independent problem solving.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of holistic health and implement health and well-being programming, in collaboration with Health and Wellness Education/Programming 
  • Perform other duties as specified by Senior Associate Director(s), and Executive Director of Sun Devil Fitness.
Kids’ Camp Job Duties:
  • Assist in developing a camp program that meets the changing needs of our young Sun Devils.
  • Build ASU pride into our camps to enhance community outreach.
  • Supervise the management of the day-to-day operations of Sun Devil Kids’ Camp, including registration processes, field trips, and facility oversight at the Tempe location.
  • Oversee the management of all policies and procedures associated with Kids’ Camp programs and services.
Administration Job Duties:
  • Cultivate an inclusive and diverse environment for student participants and staff. 
  • Address patron and parent comments, concerns, behaviors and conduct issues as necessary and with outstanding customer service.
  • Create, implement, and maintain an effective marketing plan for student engagement within (but not limited to) Sport Clubs programs and Kids’ Camps.
  • Assist with creating, forecasting, monitoring and allocating the various budgets associated with Sport Clubs and Kids’ Camp programs.
  • Assist with purchasing and maintenance of program equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct an on-going review and implementation of risk management policies and procedures.
Job location is primarily at the Tempe location; however will be required to periodically travel to other ASU campuses, (Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, and/or West)

Days and Schedule:  Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm; weekend and evenings will be required.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND six (6) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Ten (10) years of related administrative experience, which includes three (3) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master's degree in Higher Education, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Recreation, Leisure Studies, Sports Management, or a related field and a minimum of six (6) years of professional experience.
  • Experience as a team-oriented leader, able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing priorities, comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment.
  • An advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University with the ability to represent the institution well.
  • Experience supervising, training, developing, and evaluating full-time staff
  • Experience initiating collaborations with university and community partnerships.
  • Experience cultivating an inclusive, safe, and diverse environment for student participants and staff.
  • Experience with student leadership development in a higher education setting. 
  • Minimum of 2 years experience with Intramural sports, Sport Clubs, and/or summer camps.
