Researcher within

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: 04 Feb 2022

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical Neuroscience, Health and Rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology and Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, invites applications for a Researcher position within Neurochemistry at the Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry.

The Neurochemistry laboratory at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology conducts neurochemical research targeted to understand the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders. An important goal is to identify protein changes linked to the pathophysiology, known as biomarkers, which can be valuable to explore disease mechanisms, for diagnosis and to monitor treatment effects.

For the planned research the group uses state of the art NMR-spectroscopy to study large molecular complexes underlying basic cellular functions at the atomic level in combination with other structural biology methods and biophysical characterization. The group investigates macromolecular protein machines underlying essential cellular functions, e.g. protein quality control and their effect on misfolding- and aggregation-prone proteins underlying several different diseases, through biophysical and structural biology approaches e.g. high-resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Structural characterization, in-depth biophysical as well as functional analysis of post-translational modifications, protein-processing, and protein:protein interactions of disease related proteins like a-Synuclein and Tau towards identifying initial events of protein misfolding observed in neurodegenerative diseases.

Job assignments

The research project aims at advancing the molecular understanding of the function and regulation of the interplay between post translational modifications as well as protein processing within the physiological role of a-Synuclein and Tau to identify the molecular triggers underlying their disease related misfolding. To achieve this goal a plethora of techniques ranging from basic cell biology and biochemistry to advanced NMR-spectroscopy (solution and solid-state bio-NMR, in-cell NMR, small molecule NMR) and biophysical characterization. Methods in cell-biology, microbiology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and biochemistry will also be used. We are looking for a colleague, that is highly motivated, scientifically independent, and creative, as well as capable of contributing to an interdisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications

The applicant must have completed a Swedish doctoral degree or must have a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree.

A relevant scientific background in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Protein Biophysics, Structural Biology or related fields is mandatory. Previous work on related protein systems will be considered favorable.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in infectious biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or NMR spectroscopy possessing detailed experience in the following mandatory techniques:

  • Experience in recombinant protein expression from different host-systems, ranging from standard bacterial expression to insect cells and mammalian cells as well as the ability to maintain insect and mammalian cell cultures
  • Expert knowledge in solution NMR methods (e.g. assignment, data analysis, dynamics)
  • Expert knowledge in sample preparation (isotope labelling, methyl-labelling)
  • Documented knowledge in automated data procession and analysis
  • Knowledge in cell biology, including handling of mammalian cell culture etc.
  • Detailed knowledge in additional biophysical and structural biology techniques (g. CD-Spectroscopy, Surface-Plasmon Resonance or BLI, Fluorescence Spectroscopy, SEC-MALS)

Previous work with aggregation-prone disease-related proteins and their structural and/or functional characterization will be considered an advantage. The following expertise are considered favourable:

  • Experience in solid-state NMR-techniques
  • Experience in in-cell NMR-techniques in mammalian cells
  • Experience in proteomic analysis by Mass spectrometry techniques

Furthermore, a genuine interest in structure and dynamics or protein function is required. Co-Authorship in high impact journals such as Science or JACS is considered favorable.

Great importance will be placed on personal suitability.
