Offer Description
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Research Scientist) within UCD School Civil Engineering
High quality coastal waters are critically important to the sustainability of many local communities. However, such waters are frequently subjected to pressures that impact negatively on water quality status, which in some instances can result in non-compliance with EU legislations. While local authorities readily identify `problem waters' as part of their monitoring protocols during a bathing season, they often lack the resources and technical know-how to identify, and most importantly, quantify the sources and fate of pollution. Bathing water quality is strongly influenced by meteorological conditions, and the transport of Faecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) to coastal zones occurs through diffuse (from agricultural land) and point source pathways (CSOs for example).
Acclimatize 2, part funded by the Dublin Bay Bathing Water Task Force, will provide detailed analysis of the pollution pressures impacting water quality in Dublin Bay. This project follows the success of Acclimatize (www.acclimatize.eu ), which determined the most important contributors to poor water quality in Dublin Bay. The successful applicant will join a wider multidisciplinary research team engaged in detailed surveys of catchments that influence water quality in the bay. Surveys will involve sampling from both freshwater systems and nearshore coastal bathing waters such that FIB loadings from human, dog and bird inputs can be determined from collected samples. In combination with this programme of field data collection, the successful applicant will be required to develop, calibrate and validate catchment (urban and rural) and coastal (2D and 3D) models to simulate the transport and fate of key pollutants from catchments to Dublin Bay, such that the pressures on water quality are assessed in an
integrated way.
This is an advanced, research focused role, that will build on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, and where you will take a lead role in a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.
