Offer Description

Are you interested in an exciting PhD-position that is focused on international collaboration between scientific and industrial partners? This is your opportunity! We are looking for an enthusiastic and ambitious PhD-candidate who will examine the role of physical activity in the treatment of atrial fibrillation. For this position it is important that you are fluent in Dutch and that you also have good writing skills in Dutch. It is convenient if you can also speak and write German and English.

The project aims to improve treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation; the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the world. The role of exercise and physical activity is not well studied, especially not in relation to ablation (a surgical intervention in the treatment of ablation).

In this Interreg-project you will closely work with partners in the Dutch-German EUregion Rijn-Waal, with another PhD-student for ‘beat the rhythm’ being positioned at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Dusseldorf.

First, together with the German and Dutch partners, you will evaluate the physical activity patterns of patients with atrial fibrillation scheduled for ablation. Second, you will set-up an online intervention to promote physical activity within the home environment of patients with atrial fibrillation. Third, you will evaluate the effects of this intervention in a randomised controlled trial. This project will ultimately lead to improved care for patients with atrial fibrillation, leading to a reduction in complaints and improvement of quality of life.

Together with the German PhD-student, you will perform the proposed studies. You will be the main spokesperson for all partners involved in this project. You will be closely supervised by a team of well-experienced researchers and clincians, who will help you to plan, perform and analyse the proposed studies and to write scientific papers.

In addition to this challenging project, we offer:

  • A timulating and friendly working environment.
  • An experienced supervisory team and excellent embedding within the department.
  • Several opportunities for personal development.

You have finished a MSc-degree within a relevant area: Biomedical Sciences, Medicine, or Medical Biology. You are someone who is persuasive and ambitious. Also positive, proactive and independent are words that describe you.

You have affinity and experience in setting up and performing human-based research within a clinical setting. And you already have experience in data analysis and statistics. Preferably, you also have a BROK-certificate. It is important that you are fluent in Dutch and that you also have good writing skills in Dutch. It is convenient if you can also speak and write German and English.
