The Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1456 “Mathematics of Experiment: The challenge of indirect measurements in the natural sciences” at the Georg-August-University Göttingen has started on January 1, 2021 and offers the position of a
PhD student (f/m/d).
The PhD student will work on the project C01 “Density matrix reconstructions in ultrafast free electron optics” in the research group of Thorsten Hohage and will be co-supervised by Claus Ropers. Depending on the interests of the candidate different directions of research are possible. One focus could be the numerical and analytical study of plasmonic resonances described by Maxwell’s equations and inference on such resonances from experimental data. Another potential focus is the design and analysis of algorithms for inverse problems with matrix-valued unknowns.
The position should be filled as soon as possible (February 15, 2022). The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (E13 TV-L) for three years. The position is offered with 75% of the regular working hour (currently 29,9 hours per week).
About us:
The aim of CRC 1456 is to develop mathematical data analysis for the natural sciences, i.e. mathematical theory and tools to efficiently extract maximal quantitative information from experimental data. This challenge is addressed in 16 projects which are all lead jointly by a mathematician and an experimental scientist. For more information we refer to the web page https://www.uni-goettingen.de/crc1456.
Your profile:
- You hold a MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics or a related field.
- You have a background in inverse problems, partial differential equations or optimization.
- You are interested to work in an interdisciplinary team with an experimental lab and ideally have some background knowledge of physics.
- You are fully proficient in written and spoken English.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The university has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports their employees in balancing work and family life.
