The professorship of Ecoclimatology offers a 3 year PhD position to determine the late frost risk of native and future alternative tree species and provenances. Starting as soon as possible, latest autumn 2021.

The Technical University of Munich has concentrated its expertise in life sciences in the TUM School of Life Sciences at the modern Weihenstephan campus in Freising, north of Munich. It provides excellent working conditions in a lively scientific community, embedded in the vibrant research environment of the Greater Munich Area.

Ecoclimatology covers relevant fields of ecology and climatology. The interactions between atmosphere and biosphere are the main research areas of the professorship. With interdisciplinary approaches the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems within the climate system as well as impacts of physical, chemical and biological processes of ecosystems on the climate are analysed.

The tasks
  • Collect existing information on late frost risk and resilience and productivity loss of tree species and provenances
  • Select and define suitable tree species / provenances in cooperation with colleagues from the Bavarian State Institute of Forestry
  • Set up climate chamber experiments in the neighbouring Greenhous facility of TUM
  • Create statistical models with state of the art approaches

Your profile:
  • You are a highly qualified and motivated student holding a (or being close to obtaining) M.Sc. or equivalent degree in biology, agricultural or horticultural or environmental sciences, forestry, geography, or related fields
  • You have practical scientific expertise in experimental work and plant physiology
  • You have experience in scientific data analysis and good programming skills in R or any other statistical software
  • Ideally, you have experience in the application exploratory statistical analyses, especially regression models
  • You show a strong commitment, motivation, and discipline to work independently and efficiently
  • You show an excellent ability to communicate, present, and write in English, good knowledge of German will be a plus
