The group of Prof. Dr. Inke Siewert at the Faculty of Göttingen,
University of Göttingen is currently inviting applications for a

PhD Position (all genders welcome)

(Salary group 13 TV-L, initially 50 %, i.e. 19.9 h/week) in the project Electroreductions of C=O bonds catalyzed by borohydrides at the Inorganic Chemistry Institute. The position is available starting 01.04.2024 and is limited to three years. It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Job profile:
In the framework of the project you will investigate the electrochemical synthesis of borohydrides via proton-coupled electron transfer reactions in the group of Prof. Dr. Siewert. The project consists of the synthesis and characterization of molecular boron compounds, a special focus is set on the investigation of their fundamental electrochemical PCET reactivity and their use in the homogeneous C=O double bond electroreduction. Thus, you will deal with various electrochemical and spectroscopic methods in solution. You will work in a team of highly motivated researchers and develop an improved understanding of the elementary steps of the electrochemical C=O double bond reduction accomplished by main group compounds. The project is in close collaboration with the group of Prof. Eric Rivard at the University of Alberta and includes a stay at the partner university.

You hold a university master’s degree in chemistry, with a strong focus on physical inorganic chemistry with very good results. Thus, you have a profound knowledge in the synthesis of main group metal compounds, working under an inert atmosphere, spectroscopy relevant to characterize open- and closed shell-main group compounds in solution, and preferably also in molecular electrochemistry.

As a successful candidate, you are expected to participate in the structured doctoral program of the UGOE. You are expected to present your work at national and international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed international journals. Further, a very good knowledge in writing and speaking English is required. German language skills are desirable.

The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunity employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The university has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports their employees in balancing work and family life. The University aims to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.

Please send your application in electronic form in one pdf to: Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, [email protected] by 24.01.2024 explicitly mentioning the ID of the offer.
