Department/Faculty Summary

Reporting officially to the Student Recruitment Service Partner for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities within the Student Recruitment Centre of Expertise, embedded within the Office of the Registrar, the Student Recruiter is responsible for the dissemination of information about the University of Alberta, specializing in the promotion of programs and services offered within the Faculty of Native Studies, to Indigenous and non-indigenous junior high and high school students within Canada, post-secondary transfer students, their parents, and counselors, assisting in the execution of the University’s undergraduate recruitment strategy. This includes the development and implementation of recruitment initiatives that will help meet the strategic recruitment goals of both the Faculty of Native Studies, as well as the university as a whole.

Position Summary

The Student Recruiter is the primary point of contact for prospective students to the Faculty of Native Studies; they also serve as a point of contact for prospective students interested in the all undergraduate programs within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as University of Alberta, and are a key member within the Student Recruitment Centre of Expertise. The Student Recruiter will work closely with the Student Recruitment Service Partner, and with the Senior Coordinator of Admissions and Student Services within the Faculty of Native Studies, to ensure they are expertly trained and understand the needs of the Faculty of Native Studies, as well as to maintain close lines of communication regarding recruitment initiatives, emerging trends, and areas of opportunities to explore for the future. This position requires overtime, possible travel within Canada, and time away from home that may average more than five days per trip (primarily September through December). Travel and event attendance will result in variable hours of work, including evenings and weekends. 

Duties

  • In consultation with the Student Recruitment Service Partner and the Senior Coordinator of Admissions and Students Services (SCASS), responds to inquiries and performs preliminary evaluation of admissibility and suitability to the Faculty of Native Studies for prospective students
  • Answers prospective student inquiries via phone, email, and advising sessions (in-person and virtual)
  • Assist with pulling data and queries from Campus Solutions and Slate
  • Data entry – gather, enter, and maintain student inquiry data into Slate CRM
  • Works with the Student Recruitment Service Partner to assist in contributing directly to the development of all FNS recruitment collateral, in consultation with the Recruitment Marketing Team in External Relations and the Faculty of Native Studies
  • Assists with the implementation, execution, and maintenance of electronic recruitment initiatives (chat rooms, online advising, videoconferences, and electronic newsletters.)
  • Organizes and represents the Faculty of Native Studies at recruitment events (including Open House, registration workshops, information evenings, counselor workshops, etc.) which includes booth design, developing presentation materials, and coordinating volunteers
  • Assisting with research, booking of venues and marketing
  • Assists the Student Recruitment Service Partner, who will work closely with Faculty of Native Studies leadership, with the development of a Native Studies Undergraduate Recruitment plan. The plan will be developed in close consultation with the Faculty of Native Studies, and in alignment with the overarching Undergraduate Recruitment Strategy within the Student Recruitment Centre of Expertise. This includes the development and implementation of new recruitment initiatives within the Faculty of Native Studies
  • Evaluates attended recruitment events for effectiveness and efficiency; Monitors regularly the success of activities and proposes adjustments to ensure that overall recruitment goals are met, inclusive of tracking admissions within the Faculty of Native Studies
  • Contacts and communicates regularly with high school and junior high school teachers, counselors, First Nations, Metis, Inuit (FNMI) Education, post-secondary coordinators and Indigenous communities to promote the Faculty and its programs, as well as provide up-to-date information and advice regarding both FNS academic and U of A non-academic programs and services
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships and contacts with Elders, community members, high school counselors and teachers, and parents in the target areas through letter mail, phone, email, newsletters, and personal visits 
  • Performs other duties as required

Minimum Qualification

  • Post-secondary diploma required. University degree preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, including very strong public speaking and presentation skills, as well as verbal and written skills
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and with Indigenous Youth
  • Experience presenting to small and large groups
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, cross-cultural sensitivity, ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with a variety of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated problem solving, initiative, judgment, and critical thinking
  • Well-developed planning, time management and organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines and thrive under pressure in a fast paced and dynamic work environment
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and cooperatively with a team
  • Ability to lift up to 25kgs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly PowerPoint) and Google Suite
  • Technical/computer skills that will enhance the proliferation of our e-recruitment strategy
  • Knowledge of University of Alberta policies and procedures is an asset
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft an asset
  • Knowledge of Slate an asset
  • Knowledge of post-secondary institutions, options, policies and procedures including basic transfer and credit information an asset
  • Ability to speak and communicate in and Indigenous language is an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License; 3-year driver's abstract will be required
