Unit Mission Statement
The Department of Music is committed to teaching the discipline of music through its interrelated subdisciplines (music theory, musicology, ethnomusicology, music technology, performance, and composition) in the context of a liberal arts curriculum. Position Summary
The Department of Music at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a two-year Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor instructional position in Music. Appointment will begin August 10, 2024.
Responsibilities include directing the William & Mary Choir and teaching two additional courses each semester according to area(s) of expertise and departmental need (i.e. Conducting, Theory, Musicology). The William & Mary Choir is a mixed concert ensemble of fifty undergraduate singers who represent the university in a series of on-campus performances throughout the year and a regional tour in the spring semester. They make some thirty appearances during the academic year and rehearse six hours a week. The Director of Choirs also oversees the administration and budget of the Choral Area, which includes a Treble Chorus, a Gospel Choir, and a Chamber Choir.
The successful candidate will demonstrate and maintain a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to the growth of a dynamic music department through departmental participation and service. The candidate should also possess a strong interest in both growing the Choral Area and advancing the goals of the discipline of music within the context of a liberal arts curriculum.
Required Qualifications
The candidate must have a completed Master’s degree and possess a strong interest in advancing the goals of the discipline of music within the context of a vibrant liberal arts curriculum through a demonstrated commitment to outstanding undergraduate teaching and mentoring.
Preferred Qualifications
A DMA (Ph.D.) or ABD is preferred at the time of appointment (August 10, 2024). Previous experience in teaching and mentoring successful undergraduate research is preferred. The Music Department welcomes and encourages applications from individuals who have had previous conducting experience at the college or university level.
