Position Summary

The Teaching & Learning Intern provides support for teaching and learning initiatives in the Duke University Libraries and works with staff across the Libraries to help reimagine teaching and learning programs to support undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty instructors. They will gain classroom and project management experience, learn about teaching innovations to support the intellectual growth of a wide variety of learners, and develop professional skills and competencies relevant to the field of teaching, critical thinking, and program development.

This internship offers a student the chance to experience the range of Teaching & Learning activities. While these activities may be of particular interest to students pursuing a library career in public services, these skills also benefit people looking for other careers in libraries, from outreach to technology positions.

  • Participates in teaching and learning activities across the Libraries (e.g., with staff in Research and Public Services, Rubenstein Library, ScholarWorks, and CDVS) to help create lesson plans, learning outcomes, learning modules, or research guides for specific courses, programs, or initiatives.
  • Promotes teaching and learning services through special programs, blog posts, and resource guides.
  • Investigates the implications of generative AI for undergraduate learning and research behavior and recommends strategies for integrating best practices that can be integrated into Writing 101 library instruction.
  • Assesses current offerings and recommends instructional workshops to increase outreach to graduate students and early career research fellows.
  • Assists subject librarians with library instruction that aligns with the new undergraduate curriculum, supports student success, and fosters critical thinking skills.
  • Integrates resources and authors that reflect diverse backgrounds into Writing 101 instruction to encourage learners to identify, evaluate, and apply different points of view.
  • Designs and helps implement outreach connected to the QuadEx residential program.
  • Supports Research and Public Services operations and special projects, possibly including service desk coverage, chat, and email.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Participates in the Libraries’ teaching and learning initiatives to improve teaching, research, and project management skills.
  • Practices critical pedagogy skills in Writing 101 instruction to demonstrate liberatory and anti-oppressive teaching methods.
  • Participates in DUL events and meetings to build personal cultural competences,

anti-racist attitudes, and teaching and learning skills, and contributes to and enhances teaching and learning at Duke University Libraries and the profession at large.

  • Assesses new initiatives developed by staff in DUL’s teaching and learning programs to increase teaching competencies that promote student success.
  • Analyzes emerging technologies and recommends how to best integrate them into teaching and learning activities in order to stay abreast of new tools and how they can be used ethically and equitably in research and teaching.

Required: A successful applicant must have completed a bachelor's degree and must currently be enrolled in or be a recent graduate from an accredited advanced degree program.

Required: Good communication and presentation skills; flexibility; demonstrated ability to take initiative and work in a team environment; willingness to speak to diverse groups; desire and interest to work with undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and library staff; and a strong public service orientation.

Preferred: Demonstrated interest in or past experience with teaching in an academic environment, training, and/or outreach; interest in working with underrepresented and diverse student groups; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Normal office environment.
  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
  • Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Much of the work of the internship will occur on-campus but remote work may be possible, subject to the specific prioritized projects.

$18.00 per hour. The position is not eligible for University fringe benefits or moving, housing, or relocation expenses.

This internship is a temporary, part-time position available for up to 15 hours per week. Hours are flexible within a M-F, 8:30-5:00 work week, but interns are expected to set and maintain a consistent schedule. This internship will be working onsite at Duke University Libraries.  Must work from inside North Carolina.
