About the Department
 

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has 114 clinical providers, providing care at the main hospital in Hyde Park and seven off site locations. We have More than 60,000 outpatient visits, 25,000 ultrasound visits, 2,800 deliveries, 3,000 gynecological surgeries per year. Teaching, research and the highest quality clinical care are top priorities for the Department. The residency and fellowship programs are highly ranked and have a history of training leaders in healthcare. The Department also has a significant research enterprise, engaging in population health studies, as well as research conducted in wet laboratories on tumor biology and the mechanisms of hypertensive diseases in pregnancy. The department was ranked #12 on the 2020-2021 U.S. News & World Report 2020-21 for Gynecology.
This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary
 

The job facilitates and promotes a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource. Receives a moderate level of guidance and direction.
The Staff Scientist collaborates on new and ongoing research projects with a focus on, but not limited to, preeclampsia and therapeutic development. The aim of this project is to develop compounds for the purpose of treating preeclampsia. Cultured placental tissue and cells from patients will be used to assess efficacy. Molecular techniques such as Western blot, ELISA, and RT-PCR will be used to measure protein expression.
The project will require expertise in cellular and molecular biology methods, including but not restricted to primary cell culture, immunoblots, immunofluorescence, quantitative real-time PCR, and ELISA.
The Staff Scientist is part of the vibrant research environment at The University of Chicago and is encouraged to attend and participate in seminars and workshops in preparation for a successful academic career.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates on new and ongoing research projects with a focus on, but not limited to, identification and validation of therapeutics for treatment of preeclampsia as well as understanding the molecular mechanisms of the therapies.

  • Collection, manipulation, and analysis of experimental datasets.

  • In addition to independent and collaborative experimental efforts, contributes to writing, proofreading, and fact-checking papers and presentations.

  • Ensures compliance with institutional, state and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. 

  • Attends and participates in seminars and workshops in preparation for a successful academic career.

  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis. Contributes to facilitating and promoting a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.

  • Reviews laboratory protocols and training on new techniques. Manage complex data sets for research.

  • Leads the contributions to scientific writing and publications, including protocols and grants.

  • Trains new laboratory personnel.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.

Education:

  • PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree in physiology, molecular biology, or related field.

Experience:

  • A background in cardiovascular research or pregnancy and preeclampsia.
