Job Summary:

The Director of Service-Learning Curriculum is responsible for the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of the service-learning curriculum for the medical student training program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. The service-learning curriculum is part of the Health and Society domain and is required of all medical students. The vision of the Health and Society domain is to prepare CU’s physician graduates to be systems thinkers, who provide exemplary patient and family-centered care, and promote health equity and population health through advocacy and leadership on behalf of diverse patients, families, and their communities.

The service-learning curriculum will help achieve this vision by engaging learners in activities that allow them to: demonstrate curiosity about community members’ values and social determinants of health; effectively communicate with people from all backgrounds, communities, and professions to foster respectful, productive human connection and work toward shared goals; and to demonstrate behaviors that convey compassion, respect, and inclusion; and, advocate for the well-being of patients, families, communities, and populations.

The director will be responsible for continuing current and establishing new partnerships for service-learning, and student and community support for project participation. This role will require connecting and collaborating with multiple community organizations and interested parties. The Director of Service-Learning Curriculum will have dual commitment to the success of students and community partners.

As the service-learning curriculum develops, the Director of Service-Learning will need to adapt and address needs as they arise. This includes the ability to engage in continuous quality improvement.

The Director of Service-Learning curriculum will be funded at 0.3 FTE.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create the structures and processes to ensure learner readiness for community engagement
  • Identify, establish, and maintain relationships with multiple community organizations, members, and leaders to co-develop service-learning projects
  • Support students in communication and collaboration with community organizations
  • Collaborate with School of Medicine curriculum team to align service learning opportunities with the curriculum
  • Implement a robust multi-directional assessment strategy (e.g., students evaluate community organizations; community members evaluate students) in collaboration with the Community Engagement Curriculum Advisory Board (CECAB).
  • Create a process for student and/or community partners to surface concerns, needs, or challenges and to address these issues in a timely manner
  • Determine the scope and minimum requirements for service-learning community engagement experiences
  • In collaboration with service learning coordinator, track student completion of required elements and assign grades, as appropriate
  • In collaboration with curriculum team, develop grading and remediation plans
  • Provide leadership and oversight of service learning branch directors in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins 

Work Location:

Remote – this role is eligible to work remotely, but the employee must be in the United States.

Instructor:

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (Instructor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a public health, social work, healthcare, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or service-learning
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or teaching in the health professions or related field      

Sr. Instructor:

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (Senior Instructor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a public health, social work, healthcare, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or service-learning
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or teaching in the health professions or related field      

Assistant Professor:

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (Assistant Professor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a public health, social work, healthcare, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or service-learning
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or teaching in the health professions or related field      

Associate Professor:

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (Associate Professor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a public health, social work, healthcare, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or service-learning
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or teaching in the health professions or related field

Professor:

  • Candidates must be able to obtain a faculty appointment (Professor rank) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine
  • Master’s Degree or higher in a public health, social work, healthcare, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or service-learning
  • 3-5 years of leadership experience
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience with curriculum development, assessment, and/or teaching in the health professions or related field. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in collaborating with diverse communities
  • Experience with asset-based community development
  • Experience engaging with and providing assistance to student, faculty, staff and/or community within a higher education/medical education environment

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor- $30,000-$60,000 as 0.3 FTE equivalent in salary support plus benefits. This range is not in addition to your current salary.

Sr. Instructor- $30,000-$60,000 as 0.3 FTE equivalent in salary support plus benefits. This range is not in addition to your current salary.

Assistant Professor- $30,000-$60,000 as 0.3 FTE equivalent in salary support plus benefits. This range is not in addition to your current salary.

Associate Professor- $30,000-$60,000 as 0.3 FTE equivalent in salary support plus benefits. This range is not in addition to your current salary.
