Senior Applications Developer

Position Summary

Provides computational support for Duke University Libraries’ mission of partnering with campus researchers. Develops new features and applications, while maintaining existing platforms and keeping software components updated to current releases. Participates in Agile development teams and consults with partners and stakeholders on digital initiatives. Acts as lead developer for selected software projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, customizes, and maintains applications in support of collections, services, and research. Works with DUL stakeholders and partners on a wide range of technology initiatives.
  • Collaborates on the specification, development, implementation, testing, and assessment of projects related to academic research and library systems.
  • Enhances and maintains existing infrastructure for digital repositories and preservation, web applications, and library services platforms.
  • Develops and maintains cloud-based services and manages migrations to cloud storage.
  • Works with technology leaders to plan for the sustainability and scalability of DUL platforms.
  • Represents the Libraries in campus technology forums, extended open-source communities, and various cross-institutional collaborations.
  • Reviews professional literature and other forums to stay abreast of new methodologies and practices relevant to library technology; attends relevant conferences and meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Required:  Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Preferred:  Advanced degree in computer science, information science, or related field.

Experience:

Required:  At least three years of professional experience developing and implementing technology projects.

Preferred:  At least five years of experience working in production-oriented software development. Demonstrated ability to develop software architecture to support research in higher education. Experience with cloud-based architectures such as AWS or Azure, and container orchestrations systems such as Kubernetes. Experience with at least three programming languages. Experience with software lifecycle management, automated testing, continuous integration, containerization, monitoring, and version control systems.

Working Conditions

  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Normal office environment

Salary and Benefits

Salary dependent on qualifications and experience; anticipated salary range $100,000-$120,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 15 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave;   health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
