1. The Resident Director for Residential Education is a full time, live-in staff member.
2. The Resident Director for Residential Education will keep regular office hours. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position.
3. While serving on-call, the RD will remain within a 20-minute response time of the University. RDs are expected to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage. On-call responsibilities are split among staff members.
4. Essential Personnel: This position is considered to be an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the University.

Job Summary
The Resident Director position is a 12-month, full-time, live-in, professional staff position within Housing & Residential Education and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah. Reporting to an Assistant Director, Resident Directors manage either an area or a program for the benefit and support of our residents.

Starting annual salary: $51,870

Job Description Summary:
The Residence Director (RD) is a twelve-month, full-time, live-in professional staff position. The start date for this position is negotiable. The preferred start date is mid January 2024. This position is a one-year appointment renewable upon satisfactory performance evaluation, demonstration of an interest and commitment to new areas of professional development, and potential for additional contributions by the Residence Director to the work of the Housing and Residential Education Department. For the convenience of the University and to enable the proper performance of the duties and responsibilities of this position, the Residence Director must accept housing in a residential facility on the main campus of the University as a condition of accepting this position.
The Residence Director is responsible for the overall care and wellness of residents living within their assigned residential communities. This includes individual outreach and connection and supporting staff responsible for connecting residents with each other, the U community, and the many resources available to them. This is done through the planning, implementation, operation, and evaluation of a comprehensive residential curriculum for a residence hall or apartment-style housing in an on-campus and off campus communities of approximately 5000 residential students. The Residence Director may supervise a graduate student assistant, between 6 and 16 Resident Advisors (RAs), and overall building facilities management and operations.
Leadership responsibilities include student care management; staff development and training; implementation of building residential curriculum; advising student groups such as the SL Council; emergency response and crisis management; student leadership selection and development; academic initiatives; alcohol and other drug (AOD) education; multicultural and social justice education; orientation; health and wellness; and partnership with living learning communities. The Residence Director assumes leadership responsibilities at the departmental and University levels. These include working with and/or chairing residential education committees, supervising special projects, and undertaking special assignments.

Responsibilities
1. Curricular Approach – student learning, development, and success
• Direct student leaders in functional areas to facilitate lesson plans and meet learning outcomes defined by HRE’s
Curriculum.
• Oversee the development of a community and educational environment that encourages student engagement, positive relationships, and student success.
• Develop intentional student interactions and learning strategies focused on the curricular experience.
• Monitor and hold staff accountable for planning and evaluating student interactions and learning.
• Provide support to living learning communities, student leadership advising, and academic initiatives as outlined by the department.
• Encourage staff to foster a learning-centered environment by educating students on University and HRL policies; proactively developing individual relationships with students and listening to the individual needs of each student.
• Assist with annual edits and updates to continue the growth of the Curriculum.
• Support assessment measures to ensure resident learning is occurring as a result of Curriculum efforts.
• Serve on various departmental committees and/or collaterals to advance the educational experience, including but not limited to, diversity and inclusion, Training, and/or Recruitment and Selection.
2. Supervision
• Train, supervise, and evaluate a staff of 6-16 Resident Advisors.
• Opportunity to indirectly mentor departmental Graduate Assistant(s) with the goal of fully preparing them to be a professional in the field of Student Affairs and/or Housing.
• Meet regularly with supervisees on an individual and group basis, while directly overseeing student staff meetings and functions.
• Plan and implement staff development that fosters learning.
• Provide clear expectations for all Resident Advisors and hold them accountable.
• Challenge RAs to think critically and to reflect on their leadership, ethics, and values.
• Ensure RAs understands and implements departmental and university mission/vision.
• Provide both on-going informal and formal performance feedback.
3. Community
• Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and professional staff. Coordinate and represent the Housing & Residential Education Department on committees, recruitment activities, or projects as assigned.
• Initiate and support faculty, student, and staff interaction. Work with student staff members to facilitate resident attendance at University programs on campus. Assist with faculty involvement efforts in the residential community.
• Collaborate with campus partners to implement principles of community and student care and support that not only aligns with the building’s residential curriculum, but to also actively foster a sense of community within the residence halls.
• Create and develop an intentional and transformative residence hall community experience.
• Encourage RAs to interact with students and build healthy, appropriate relationships.
• Encourage RAs to be available and visible to students.
• Promote positive interactions and decisions, which affirm individual responsibility, demonstrating respect for others, personal boundaries and University property.
4. Student Conduct and Crisis Intervention
• Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, University Police, or community
members utilizing HRE’s Advocate software package.
• Serve as a conduct hearing officer and case manager.
• Train, instruct, and oversee graduate assistant(s) in their role as conduct hearing officers, as needed.
• Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the conduct process.
• Educate staff to enforce University and Housing policies.
• Participate in rotating professional staff on-call duty coverage for assigned coverage area during the full calendar year.
• Provide appropriate referrals and follow-up with students and staff as needed.
• Serve as a liaison with the University Police Department, Dean of Students, and Counseling Center.
• Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards.
• Serve as a Campus Security Authority for the University of Utah and assist in reporting incident information as needed.
5. Administration and Building Management
• Perform administrative duties to maintain a functioning residence hall complex, such as check‑in and check‑out, room transfers, health and safety checks, fire drills, other responsibilities related to the residential curriculum, etc.
• Serve as a liaison to Administrative Services, Accounting, and Facilities/ custodial staff regarding resident management as needed to support residents and manage spaces.
• Maintain an area budget and approve staff expenditures in accordance with purchasing guidelines.
• Collaborate with the Housing Occupancy team to follow up with occupancy, room transfers, and student and student issues.
• Complete all paperwork in an accurate, thorough, and timely manner.
• Conduct facilities walkthroughs and report ongoing facilities and safety/security concerns.
• Monitor the physical maintenance of the hall in cooperation with Facilities.
• Attend various meetings on a weekly/biweekly basis including, but not limited to: Residential Education staff meetings, area staff meetings, committee meetings, and weekly meetings with students and supervisors.
• Participate in and/or manage large scale annul processes such as training, opening/move-in, evaluations, etc.
• Other duties as assigned (by the Associate Director of Residential Education, or the Director of Residential Education, or their designee). 
Minimum Qualifications
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years’ experience OR Master’s degree in College Student Personnel/Student Affairs Administration or a related field OR
• Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student population, supporting the needs of marginalized students, and engaging students and staff on issues of diversity and social justice.
• Previous experience in supervision, administration, organization, and planning.
• Demonstrated experience leading student staff teams.
• Demonstrated experience with student conduct, crisis intervention, and emergency response.
Preferences
PREFERRED:
· Direct experience working in Residential Education and/ or Housing.
· Direct experience responding to student crisis and/or facility emergencies.
· Experience analyzing and resolving conflicts, building teams, and managing group dynamics.
· Knowledge of current and emerging principles within Student Affairs and Housing & Residential Education.
· Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a high energy and fast paced department.
· Knowledge of sound fiscal and ethical budgetary practices.
· Previous experience advising student organizations/boards.
