The Kaplan Lab is in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. The Kaplan Lab works on mechanisms of gene expression, specifically gene transcription, using model organisms such as budding yeast as well as developing systems in mammalian cells to understand how diseases might arise from altered transcription. Biological Sciences is a diverse and collegial department. The Kaplan Lab seeks an organized, motivated Research Technician with genetic and molecular experience with microorganisms. Experience with simple protein purification, molecular cloning, and standard protein and DNA work is required (PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis). Experience with design and use of CRISPR/ Cas9 approaches for genome editing in yeast is a plus. Experience in data analysis using R and R packages is a plus. Excellent organization skills are required. Good communication skills are required.  Experience with mammalian cell culture would be highly valued.



Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.


Essential Functions 

Working with fine motor skills for repetitive actions with tubes, small samples and volumes. Ability to sit/stand at research bench as needed to accomplish all tasks. Ability to visually monitor lab and experiments. Ability to communicate clearly about experiments and situations.


Physical Effort 

Working at research bench can occur standing or sitting. Some biochemical assays will require standing for certain periods of time (hours).  Occasional lifting of trays of material for sterilization <25 lbs.
