About the Opportunity

Job Summary

The Takacs lab is looking to hire a research technician. The holder of this position will work alongside the principal investigator, Dr. Constantin Takacs, and other members of the lab, in the execution of research projects focused on understanding the biology of the Lyme disease bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi . Execution of an independent project is also possible depending on the applicant’s interest and demonstrated abilities. A fraction of the applicant’s time will involve lab management duties.

Responsibilities

·        Conduct experimentation necessary to meet the goals of the projects.

·        Assist in experimental design and troubleshooting.

·        Maintain laboratory in a clean and safe manner.

·        Maintain well documented laboratory records.

·        Perform basic lab maintenance tasks such as ordering laboratory reagents and small equipment, preparing media solutions, using sterile technique, and keeping detailed lab records.

·        May report research activities at monthly lab meetings.

·        May train and instruct less experienced personnel.

Qualifications

·        A bachelor’s degree in biology or related field is required. In addition, the successful candidate must demonstrate a high scholastic performance in college. A GPA of at least 3.7 is recommended.        

·        Previous experience in microbiology (aseptic technique, bacterial culture), molecular biology (DNA and RNA purification, PCR, molecular cloning design, miniprep, etc.), and protein biochemistry (protein expression, purification, Western blotting) is desired. Experience working at biosafety level two and in biosafety cabinets, and/or working with Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease agent, is helpful.

·        Must have excellent communication and organizational skills and great attention to detail.      

·        Ability to work individually and in groups.
