What we want

The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a member of the laboratory team in the Center for Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases.  We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The successful applicant will bring their experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting executives in a fast-paced environment. Required Education and Experience:

  • Appropriate bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.



Required Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines. 

  • Must be literate in the English language and able to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills in English.



Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology or related field.

  • Research experience in molecular biology and protein biochemistry.

  • Experience with basic biochemistry and molecular biology techniques.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.



Preferred Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience with molecular biology and biochemistry, cloning of genes, protein expression in bacterial cells, and protein purification.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of routine and specialized laboratory experiments and procedures including standard molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, protein expression and purification.
  • Execute, complete, and summarize research results for experimental protocols.
  • Designing simple research experiments, operating and maintaining a variety of laboratory equipment including incubators/shakers, autoclaves, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, etc.
  • Assistance in basic operation of the lab, including preparation of media and solutions, organization of lab supplies, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Uses computers and laboratory or technical equipment to perform data analysis. Selects and applies standard techniques.
  • Keeps detailed records of data.
  • Assists in writing and preparing proposals to funding agencies.
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings within the center and other departments.
  • Participate in joint projects involving faculty, lab personnel, and graduate students.
  • Assists with reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
