Job Summary
The recently established Newcomer Clinic provides Utah’s newly arriving refugee individuals, families, and asylum seekers access to vital health screenings and exceptional continuity medical services. Located at the University of Utah Population Health Center, the Newcomer Clinic is a novel approach to improving refugee health and is the largest of its kind in Utah – seeing approximately 75.0% of the state’s refugees and asylum-seekers annually. Often serving as the first-touch point, the Newcomer Clinic plays critical roles not only in promoting health, but also in helping this population navigate community programs and social services. Finding itself at the intersection of the University, State, and Community, the Newcomer Clinic leverages a dynamic, cross-sectional team to meaningfully improve the lives of these newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers.
This clinic is seeking a Medical Assistant I (MA I) ready to contribute to a high-quality, trauma-informed, patient-centered care model for an under-served population – spanning both adults and children. This unique role primarily supports direct patient care for the Newcomer Clinic, and secondarily supports the University of Utah Population Health Center’s other clinical programs as part of the Center’s Medical Assistant Pool.
This position is ideal for a proactive, self-driven individual keen on improving clinic operations and contributing to this mission-driven team.
This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at 168 North 1950 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116 if they are healthy and without COVID -19 symptoms.
Responsibilities
The Newcomer Clinic Medical Assistant’s primary responsibilities include a combination of the following:
  • Clinical Support and Assistive Patient Care: Aid the clinical team in providing comprehensive adult and pediatric patient care.
  • Culture & Language Navigation: Leverage interpretive services to support effective, culturally responsive health promotion & education and successful navigation of clinical next steps and connections with community programs and social services.
  • Scheduling Management: Manage schedules for patients, providers, and other care team members to enhance both the care and the care delivery experience.
  • Office and Clinical Operations: Take part in office management, including supply ordering and maintaining clinic protocols, to ensure a supportive healthcare and effective environment.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure and responses to standardized medical history questions.
  • Reports all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to a licensed staff member.
  • Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments ( CLIA ) Waved Lab tests such as urine dip stick, Hgb, Hct, finger stick, glucose, hemoccults, hCg and reports results. May perform patient phlebotomies in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training.
  • Performs specialty skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization and injections (IM, Subq and intradermal).
  • Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assists with procedures.
  • Monitors and cleans assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment reporting outdated supplies, stock levels and restock set levels of items and necessary equipment repairs.
  • Answers telephones, forwards telephone messages and under the direction of licensed staff schedules appointments, procedures, and diagnostic tests.
  • Assists in routine clerical functions such as filing of patient’s records, locating and compiling department charts, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes.
  • Attends and completes mandatory in services including infection control, safety, CPR, equipment usage and procedures according to department policies.
  • May apply leads and monitors for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
  • May assist inpatient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members.
  • May assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Required
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Preferred
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
