Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the University of Utah School of Medicine has an opening for a part-time, experienced Advice Nurse. The Advice Nurse is responsible for telephone communication with pediatric cardiology patients and their families. It is incredibly important that they are able to interpret the request and critically think how to triage next steps on behalf of the patient and their families to provide the best care plan moving forward possible.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Respond to all incoming calls from patients, parents, physicians, dentists, pharmacies, social agencies, and schools. Issues are either resolved by a nurse with cardiologist consultation, if necessary, or sent to appropriate cardiology staff. The Advice Nurse will be responsible for patient/parent calls including topics such as:

o Medication discussions
o Explanation of diagnosis
o Cardiac physiology
o Care of chronically ill child
o Triage of medical problems
o Referral to primary care provider
o Referral to ED
o Telephone management of the ill child until medical care can be accessed
o Handle all prescription refills, including some insurance prior authorizations that are received via prescription message line or fax
  • Prepare routine written communication for cardiologists such as school care plans, cardiac clearance for medical procedures, Make a Wish, etc.
  • Monitor and observe care of patients receiving Coumadin or Lovenox treatment including medication adjustments, patient teaching prior to discharge, and weekly to monthly follow-up on lab data.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Required 
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire. 
Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah. 
Preferred 
Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire. 
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Limited exemptions may be made for documented medical contraindications or religious beliefs that object to vaccinations.
