The Linguistics Department hosts a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to the study of language. It focuses on grammar, language variation, and acquisition (both of spoken and signed languages), the physics and perception of speech sounds, and the automated processing of speech and language by computers. The department’s 18 faculty members and five staff members serve 180 undergraduate majors, 53 ASL and Linguistics minors, 126 graduate students (PhD and CLMS students), and many non-majors enrolled in courses.   

The Program Coordinator (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv) supports personnel with instructional and research activities and is often the first contact for the public inquiring about departmental activities and resources. The Program Coordinator’s desk is the hub of the Linguistics Department.
