The Bioinformatics Analyst I provides highly specialized consulting and data analysis services to researchers at the Hutch and across the wider Fred Hutch/UW Cancer Consortium. This position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple overlapping demands, and communicate effectively with faculty, and research staff on a wide range of topics in biology, and data science.

The Gujral lab at the Fred Hutch has an opening for a Computational Scientist with experience in biological sciences/biotechnology. This position will work with members of the laboratory of Dr. Taran Gujral in the Division of Human Biology to embark on an exciting journey to tackle some of the most burning issues in infectious cancer etiology, cancer treatment, metastasis, and drug resistance, through an approach which combines cutting edge computational methods and focused biology studies in cell lines and animal models. The project's overall goal is to understand interactions between cancer cells and immune cells.


Responsibilities
  • The candidate is expected to work independently with direction from the PI. This position sits in the laboratory space for a highly collaborative environment.
  • The candidate will work to perform large-scale analysis of transcriptomics (RNAseq, single-cell RNAseq)or epigenetic datasets that are either generated in the Gujral lab or publicly available. This will entail:
  • Processing, aligning, and loading the datasets in appropriate programs (R or Python)
  • Displaying the data, and generating data-driven hypotheses, which will be tested in the lab.
  • Some analyses will include non-linear modeling such as neural networks, statistical modeling such as regression, and image analysis.
  • The candidate will present these findings in the lab meetings and are expected to contribute data figures for the manuscript/grant preparation.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in Biology, Statistics, Computer Science or related field with 0-2 years of work experience with bioinformatics in the relevant scientific domain.
  • Proficiency in, at least, one modern scripting or programming language (Python, R, Node, orC++)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to learn new tools and content quickly and independently.
  • Direct experience must include best-practice germline & somatic variant calling from exomecapture data, analysis of bulk RNA-seq data with multiple contrasts, analysis of multimodal single-cell profiling data, gene set enrichment, and integration of data across multiple modalities (e.g., epigenetic profiling and RNA-seq).
  • Effective use of shell scripting and significant fluency in R and Python are essential.
  • Facility with commonly used Bioconductor packages, ggplot etc. Ability to generate and customize common data visualizations (PCA plots, volcano plots, Circos plots, etc).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are absolutely required.
  • Good numeracy, literacy, and organizational skills.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $67,728.00 to $99,236.80 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
