Job Summary:

The Department of Ophthalmology has a Principal Data Scientist position available. The Principal Data Scientist will support the machine learning team in Ophthalmology. This individual will act as a resource for this team and the department to help develop and deploy machine learning algorithms and data analytics to improve patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Works with department leadership and clinicians to develop and deploy machine learning algorithms and data analytics to improve patient care and efficiency.
  • Building machine learning models to analyze medical images.
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and members of the research group in the area of machine learning, computer vision and natural language processing.
  • Perform scientifically rigorous data management and analyses.
  • Write custom scripts to access databases and analyze data.
  • Provide the data science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of biomedical investigators and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to junior staff on projects to ensure highest quality.

Work Location:

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 1-2 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology, or a directly related field from an accredited institution.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • The position requires three (3) years of extensive, diverse, and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for machine learning algorithms and data analytics.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Experience with multimodal approaches for image and text alignment, specifically for object detection in images.
  • Experience working with medical imaging data such as fundus photographs, OCTs, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Track record of publishing research in top AI-related venues (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, CVPR, MICCAI, etc.).
  • Three (3) years of experience with Python, Numpy, Matplotlib, Pandas, Scipy, and Pytorch/TensorFlow.
  • Extensive experience with technologies such as Bash, Linux, Git, SQL, and Docker.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent programming skills.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams (e.g. clinicians, software engineers, data scientists) to develop real-world medical AI applications.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $97,081 - $110,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
