Position Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 26 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
The Center’s mission is to collaborate with research and community partners to:
- Enhance the ability of public health practitioners, as well as individuals, groups and communities to promote health and prevent disease
- Identify funding opportunities and support high quality research
- Conduct, evaluate and disseminate innovative, community-based research, and
- Develop education and training programs to translate research into public health practice.
Position Summary
This position will implement a two-year supplemental research project to identify how the gut microbiota may mediate dietary effects on cardiometabolic risk within community-based dietary interventions, like the (Delicious Eating for Life in Southern Homes) DELISH study. DELISH is an (National Institutes of Health) NIH-funded weight loss intervention testing the efficacy of a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern, adapted for a southeastern United States population.
This position will independently conduct a supplemental research study including obtaining all relevant IRB approvals and following University and agency guidelines for the design and implementation of the study. This position will collaborate closely with the DELISH team and will be responsible for all technical reporting related to the supplemental study
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Doctorate required
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Postdoctoral experience of at least one year. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to conduct, evaluate and disseminate innovative, community-based research. Develop education and training programs to translate research into public health practice
