About the Opportunity

Job Descriptions

The School of Architecture in the College of Arts, Media and Design at Northeastern University announces searches for open-rank, tenured or tenure-track positions at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels in building technology in relationship to issues of climatology, sustainability, and health in the built environment. For at least one of these faculty positions, we seek candidates qualified for a joint appointment in the College of Engineering with a particular focus on urban, coastal, geological, and ecological resilience.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching engage with one or more of the following or related themes: impact of changing climatological conditions on the built environment; urban planning and landscape architecture scales of resilience; climate responsive and regenerative architecture, urbanism, and infrastructure; integration of life cycle, embodied energy, and embodied carbon analyses into design processes, material production, and construction logics and logistics; advanced material and fabrication research and practices; integration and synergies of data, informatics, and the built environment; innovative energy and environmental systems for health and wellbeing from architectural to urban scales. We have a particular interest in candidates with a record of professional practice or other industrial engagement.

Responsibilities

Faculty for these positions will be expected to develop high-impact independent research programs that attract external funding. There is strong potential for faculty to work with colleagues in other disciplines through Northeastern’s growing network of research centers and labs, including but not limited to our Global Resilience Institute, the SENTRY Center of Excellence, the Marine Science Center, and others. Research obligations also include overseeing  student research assistants and postdocs in their area of research. Additionally, faculty must be committed to teaching excellence at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and will be expected to teach core building technology and other courses that correspond with their expertise, including new seminars, lecture courses, or design studios in the School of Architecture. Faculty must also participate in service to the School, the College, the University, and the discipline at large.

Required Qualifications

A terminal degree in the candidate’s field (M.Arch, MLA, or a related field) or PhD (Architecture, Engineering, or a related field) is required by the appointment start date. The College is seeking to give excellent candidates across all demographics of society the opportunity, resources, and support to establish innovative and impactful research careers. This includes candidates at the earliest stages of their careers as well as those who are more established. For select candidates, there may be an option of a 1- to 2-year College funded mentored post-doc Fellow position to allow candidates to ramp up their research programs before starting on the tenure track. Academic rank at the Associate Professor and Full Professor levels will be commensurate with experience and qualifications reflecting a record of demonstrated teaching and scholarly excellence.

Applications

To apply, Applicants should submit: (a) a cover letter outlining qualifications and vision for the position, including your research interests and activities, teaching experience and interests; (b) please include a DEI philosophy in your letter about how you can support our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, and students in your research, teaching, and service activities; (c) curriculum vitae; (d) the names and email addresses of three references. References will not be contacted without prior permission from the candidate. Examples of research, creative activities, professional and published work, and full letters of reference may be requested at later stages of the search. Applications received by December 1 will be guaranteed full review. Inquiries may be directed to Associate Professor Peter Wiederspahn, chair of the search committee, at [email protected].
