Why Join Us:

The Department of Emergency Medicine conducts ground-breaking research into areas such as trauma, injury prevention, global health, opioid misuse, critical care, mental health, pharmacogenomics, toxicology, and healthcare policy.  The Department values team members who are eager to pursue further training and exciting career growth as a researcher and professional.

The C3 Global Trauma Network , led by principal investigator (PI) Dr. Nee-Kofi Mould-Millman, MD PhD MSCS, conducts innovative, collaborative, federally-funded physical trauma and injury care clinical research, predominantly in high-trauma international settings. The C3 Network is comprised of multi-disciplinary collaborators and institutions that are both in the United States and in South Africa. The scientific core of the C3 Network, which includes the data and analytic hub, is termed the C3 “Lab”. The C3 Lab operates within the Department of Emergency Medicine and is located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado. The C3 Lab is comprised of a program manager, data managers, coders/analysts/programmers, professional research assistants, and other clinician-investigators who all work on-site. The C3 Lab is not a “wet lab” (we analyze data from clinical research, not bench research).

The C3 Network seeks to generate high-quality evidence to enhance early trauma care, with a special focus on improving patient outcomes in resource-constrained settings (particularly, in lower-income countries). The C3 Network conducts a variety of rigorous observational and interventional methodologies are used to fill contemporary clinical knowledge gaps. The C3 Network has a track record of NIH and U.S. Department of Defense funding, including dozens of published peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific presentations. Our research also deliberately seeks to fill clinical and scientific gaps for civilians worldwide and the U.S. military.

The C3 Network and Lab has a particular focus on improving the care of the most critical trauma patients (for example, those experiencing major bleeding or head injuries victims from gun violence and severe car crashes) by generating and applying evidence and by discovering and testing promising care strategies. Examples of strategies include medications and therapeutics (such as blood products) and life-saving interventions and surgeries. Timeliness to interventions, and time to development of outcomes, is an important scientific element of our work. Research outcomes commonly include morbidity (e.g., disability, organ failure, hospital length of stay) and mortality (early e.g., 24-hours, and late e.g., 30-days). The research team focuses on both observational studies and interventional studies related to emergency and trauma care for life-threatening injuries in resource-constrained settings, with a current focus in South Africa. Our discoveries in these areas will propel forward the field of trauma care and help reduce death and disability worldwide.
