Position Summary
Molecular Laboratory Technologist to develop and implement Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) compliant standard operating procedures, tests and methods in the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL). Performs testing and analysis of clinical and environmental samples, including the development, validation, evaluation and implementation of new diagnostic methods in molecular microbiology; proper operation of equipment and resources in relationship to select projects; and the collection, analysis and review of findings to provide recommendations relevant to the continuation and successful completion of projects. Works with NPHL directors, managers, and staff in the coordination of state and national programs that are relevant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) activities for emerging infectious diseases and biological preparedness.

5. Individual will need to be able to work within a BSL3 high containment laboratory environment with Risk Group Level 3 pathogens as part of this job requirement.
6. Individual will be required to be on call.
7. Individual must be able to pass a Department of Justice (DOJ) risk assessment to have access to and work with federally regulated biological agents (Select Agents).
8. Individual must be able to pass an N95 fit test.

Preferred Education: Master's degree or equivalent

Four or more years’ progressive experience in a research or clinical laboratory setting with some experience in molecular biology.

Preferred Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to establish testing priorities and ensure efficient use of time and resources.
2. Able to exercise independent judgment to resolve problems, and reports accordingly.
3. Knowledge of whole genome sequencing and current clinical microbiologic practices.
4. Experience in molecular biology relating to PCR and/or WGS.
5. Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding public health laboratories.
