The University of Chicago's Section of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology in the Biological Sciences Division, seeks Medical Physicist faculty members at any rank. The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology is a multi-institutional department and includes partnerships with the University of Illinois, and 3 other suburban community health systems. Academic rank and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

The physics section includes 6 faculty as well as 9 Ph.D. and 3 M.S. level staff physicists, in addition to 9 dosimetrists and support staff covering all 5 sites. Clinical operations at distributed sites treat approximately 200 patients per day with a mix of state-of-the-art and older machines and techniques, e.g., HDR, prostate seed implants, IMRT, IGRT, framed and frameless, SRS, SBRT. Equipment at the University of Chicago Medical Center includes: 3 Varian TrueBeams and a Trilogy LINAC with MLC, EPID, OBI, AlignRT and gating; Brainlab Exactrac and 6D couch; Philips CT simulators, VariSource HDR, and Eclipse TPS. 

Our faculty are active in the NIH T32-supported Graduate Program in Medical Physics as well as the accredited physics residency and certificate programs. Strong research collaborations exist with Radiology faculty in image analysis, radiomics, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), CT technique development for IGRT, and functional and anatomic imaging (clinical and preclinical). The Department has an extensive cancer biology research program, and collaboration between radiology, physics and biology researchers is encouraged. The Department has a strong research interest in image guidance, treatment technique development, dosimetry, treatment planning, quality assurance, image-based treatment assessment as well as AI, machine learning, deep learning, and radiomics to improve clinical efficiency and workflow as well as research to improve therapeutic index. We especially welcome applicants with strong computational background and experience in big data analysis, AI, machine learning/deep learning, and radiomics.  

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must possess: 1) a doctoral degree in physics or a closely related field such as nuclear engineering, and 2) American Board of Radiology board certification eligibility in therapeutic medical physics.
