Job Summary
This position is an integral member of the Residence Education team in the Department of Housing & Residential Education within the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director will support and operate a comprehensive conduct management and support the resident outreach model for the residential population at the University of Utah. The Assistant Director will also work collaboratively with colleagues who are overseeing the areas of Living Learning Communities, Theme Communities, Residential Experience, Facilities, and Business.

Education is home to over 5,000 students who live in the 2002 Winter Olympic athlete village, new construction, totaling 22 co-ed residence halls and 10 apartment buildings. In addition, Housing & Residential Education (HRE) has two apartment buildings located in downtown Salt Lake City that constitute Downtown Commons. HRE is growing with a 400-bed fourth wing of Kahlert Village, opening in fall 2023 and a 800-bed residence hall for innovation and entrepreneurship opening in 2024. The University Housing Campus Master plan calls for continued growth and construction to meet the housing demand, with a stated goal of adding 5,000 beds over the next five years.
Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Conduct Management and Resident Outreach will:
  • Provide direction for staff in their role as hearing officers by overseeing/directing student conduct case information to ensure accurate and consistent follow up (leadership, training, support and guidance). This will include developing a skills based hearing officer training, sanction flowchart for consistent outcomes, and effective case distribution.
  • Track cases starting with the incident report, through adjudication, and ending with sanction completion. This tracking should include identifying and classifying elements of Title IX, Clery Act, FERPA, and CARE. The tracking of data will lead to the Assistant Director reporting on trends in the residence halls.
  • Directly supervise two full time Residential Community Coordinator and/or two full time Residential Outreach Coordinators, have a dotted line supervision structure to, (9) Resident Directors, and (2) Residential Education Coordinators
  • Work as the primary HRE liaison to the Office of the Dean of Students. This will include weekly case meetings with the ODOS, consolations with case management, and follow-up as needed. Providing regular updates to both the Associate Dean/Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards and the Associate Director of Housing & Residential Education will be consistent in this role. As acting Title IX Deputy in HRE these consolations may result in joint accommodations that the Assistant Director would be required to bring back to HRE for implementation.
  • Have frequent collaborations with the Student Wellness Center, University Counseling Center, University Police Department, and related offices is expected as the liaison from HRE. These collaborations will produce early intervention programming programs as well as informing residents of processes for assistance.
  • Serve as after business hour support for our on-call staff through the Assistant Director on-call rotation, as part of the department response team in the case of an emergency. Thorough response to critical inquiries or needs from families, students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other campus constituents is an expectation along with knowledge of legal issues pertinent to housing.
  • Assist in Residential Experience Model outcomes and creation.
  • Assist in emergency management planning, crisis management, and training for staff.
  • Starting in summer 2024, this position will focus on either care or conduct, based on conversations with the supervisor, as another Assistant Director will be hired in this area.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Master’s Degree in higher education administration or a related field is required.
  • Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience.
  • Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

  • 3 years of professional experience in conduct management with increasing responsibility.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering engagement of students and staff on issues of diversity and social justice.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative supervisory and colleague working relationships.
  • Dedication to the professional development of staff.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging principles of good practices for Student Affairs and Housing & Residential Education.
  • Demonstrated experience with student leadership, student conduct, crisis intervention and emergency response.
  • Ability to multi-task and remain organized in a high energy, fast paced department
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating with stakeholders, residents, and families.
  • Functional use of Microsoft Office: Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel.
