Job Description

Under general direction, coordinates and manages unit-wide functions to include establishing, coordinating, planning, promoting, and implementing guidelines and policies for electronic and print communications, which may include web design. Responsible for the oversight of all design elements and overall quality of the college/department communications materials to internal and external constituents including faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, donors, and the community.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of graphic design principles with respect to aesthetic fundamentals, audience identification, readability, and persuasive principles to apply to communications resulting in high quality, results-driven design.

Salary Range

$61,425 - $83,000 per year; DOE


Essential Duties

  • Edits, writes, and prepares layouts for web pages, annual reports, brochures, newsletters, and other college publications.
  • Serves as initial point-of-contact and liaison for all design project requests within the college and oversees the project from concept through completion to ensure accuracy, quality, timeliness, and budget constraints.
  • Assesses unit operation functions and develops and implements policies, procedures and objectives.
  • Review and approve creative materials produced by other departments and offices.
  • Manages projects, including day-to-day functions (coordination and integration of information) as well as long range planning and design, working with technical services providers and end users.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.  
  • Monitors work in progress and upon completion.
  • Implements corrective action as required.
  • Coordinates print and electronic needs with administrative departments regarding print and electronic communications needs; develops ideas and suggests modifications to existing ideas. 
  • Demonstrates graphic techniques and advises departmental personnel on techniques, software, training opportunities, style rules, etc. 
  • Resolves issues concerning web and print communication.
  • Represents the college/department and serves on various department and university committees. 
  • Serves as a representative of the University at state, regional and national organizations, boards, councils and committees as assigned. 
  • Creates and maintains files for such items as degree requirements, descriptions of major programs, statistics describing facilities and populations, admissions information, etc. 
  • Communicates with other department and university administrators; resolves or assists with the resolution of sensitive issues.
  • Operates various graphic design equipment and software. 
  • Manages the selection of vendors and arranging delivery of the finished product; participates in job estimation, vendor specifications, and vendor relations; oversees bid specifications for jobs assigned to outside vendors; coordinates production of material with outside vendors by monitoring jobs in progress, resolving technical problems, proofing material and ensuring deadlines are met. 
  • Reports any problems affecting job quality, due dates, and cost to the internal client, project manager, and/or stakeholders. 
  • Manages projects, including day-to-day functions (coordination and integration of information) as well as develops strategic long range plans with Coordinator of Communications & Marketing, graphic designers, technical services providers and end users. 
  • Creates electronically designed page layouts and web-based graphics, imports word processing files into space layouts.
  • Maintains department files of completed assignments; maintains accurate logs of work in progress such as time devoted to project and materials used. 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or a related field AND five years of related experience, including three years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Professional experience in communications in higher education or with mission-driven organizations such as healthcare systems, foundations, or non-profits, especially those working with diverse cultures or communities, OR, experience within higher education (preferred), marketing, advertising or agency.
  • Experience with new media and innovative approaches for promoting the college brand (i.e. Web, audio, and video).
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency related to daily job functions (Adobe Creative Suite; Microsoft Office; Google Suite). 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of AP style. 
  • Experience designing promotional materials, both print and web-based, and using social media in marketing communications.
  • Demonstrated strengths in project management, multitasking, problem-solving and attention to detail.
  • Experience in supervision and directing the work of others.
  • Experience in project leadership, collaboration and team building.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining effective relationships with coworkers and a variety of constituents including faculty, staff, teams and community members.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices of communication and marketing methods and techniques.
  • Experience translating complex and technical subjects/stories for a general audience.
  • Experience proofreading and providing constructive feedback.
  • Experience in presentations.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and travel moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to: computer workstation/laptop (keyboard, monitor, mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer technology peripherals
