Laboratory Technician Position in Socio-ecological Plant Systems and Public Policy

Description:

The Garcia Lab at Northeastern University's Coastal Sustainability Institute invites applications for a Lab Technician position located at the Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. The Lab Technician will work in collaboration with PI Garcia and other lab members on a range of projects, so interested applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our research. This work focuses on: (1) the patterns, mechanisms, and consequences of crop fluctuations, (2) the socio-ecological dynamics of restored ecosystems and nature-based solutions, and (3) the resilience of agroforestry systems.

The Lab Technician should be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. They will coordinate laboratory and field logistics for the Garcia Lab and will participate in data collection and analysis for various projects. They should be interested in being trained in new skills and techniques as needed. Driving to field sites in the Northeast and traveling both independently and with a research team to Puerto Rico and Costa Rica will be expected. Some degree of remote work is possible.

The successful applicant will:

  • Conduct field and laboratory experiments and interviews and focus groups;
  • Collect, organize, and maintain ecological and social data;
  • Conduct standard elemental analyses to assess plant resource storage;
  • Assist with analysis, visualization, and communication of ecological and social data;
  • Help train and coordinate lab personnel, including undergraduate and high school research assistants; and
  • Oversee general lab maintenance and purchasing

The position is for one year with the potential for additional.

Location:

The successful applicant will work at the Northeastern University Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. Travel to field sites in New England and Latin America will be expected.

Qualifications:

Candidates from groups systemically marginalized in science are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be able to work independently and with others, be curious and willing to learn new skills, and be highly organized. A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field (Ecology and Evolution, Environmental Science, Biology, Conservation Science, Environmental Policy) is preferred. Ideal candidates will also have some hands-on experience in some of the research areas described above. Familiarity with statistical analysis and related software is a plus.
