Job Summary:

This position is in the Immunology and Microbiology Department in Dr. Kathryn Haskins’ lab. The research focus of the laboratory is to study the role of autoreactive T cells in autoimmune diabetes. This research position will involve laboratory-based studies on mice and with mouse samples performed at biosafety level 2. A successful candidate will take responsibility for overseeing the Haskins mouse colony, participate in research projects, and help maintain the operation of the laboratory. The work will involve considerable time per week overseeing mice in the animal facility (setting up breeding cages, tending to diabetic animals, participating in ongoing experiments in mice); there will also be experimental work in the lab and some clerical and managerial activities.  The employee will be working closely with the lab manager and will assist a graduate student in experimental work.  Occasionally, experimental protocols may require working in the evening or on weekends.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee cost expenditures in animal facility (per diem rates, diet cost, animal supplies, ordering new animals, etc.).
  • Prepare amendments and animal protocol for IACUC.
  • Create and update protocols.
  • Maintain online mouse inventory system (Transnetyx Colony).
  • Manage breeding colony and animal numbers.
  • Order new animals via Animal Procurement in eSirius.
  • Act as a liaison between laboratory personnel and animal care staff to promptly resolve any mouse-related issues.
  • Perform animal genotyping and identification.
  • Perform the following dissections: spleen, pancreas, lymph nodes, tumors.
  • Perform the following injections on mice: subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, retroorbital.
  • Perform the following bleeds on mice: submandibular, cardiac puncture.

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO .

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year professional-level research experience.

Senior Level: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional-level research experience. 

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a basic science laboratory.
  • Experience with laboratory management.
  • Experience with animal breeding and handling.
  • Previous experience with flow cytometry, and molecular biology/biochemistry. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Demonstrate that they are well-organized, reliable, independent, and possess considerable attention to detail. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as:

Entry Level: $42,088 - $53,536

Intermediate Level: $45,801 - $58,259

Senior Level: $49,515 - $62,983

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
