Job Summary:

As an important member of the research team, this Laboratory Science Professional will support the research of Dr. Arianne Theiss, Associate Professor, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The focus of the Theiss lab is basic science research in the topic area of obesity and inflammation in mitochondrial health during inflammatory bowel diseases and colon cancer.  This position is accountable for meeting study-specific goals and timelines, while also performing and assisting with research tasks. This position communicates appropriately and effectively with investigators and other team members, has outstanding customer service skills, and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
    • Meeting with the project Principal Investigator on a weekly basis for the purpose of progress updates and mentoring
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
    • Biochemical analysis, quantitative PCR, PCR, cell culture, intestinal organoid culture, ELISA, flow cytometry, western blot, tissue histology, mouse handling and dissection
    • Utilizing specialized knowledge and sophisticated research techniques examining inflammation-related signaling by intestinal epithelial cells and stem cells
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research.
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results.
    • Collecting, recording, analyzing, and presenting data
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes and evaluate the results produced.
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
    • Implementation of schedule methodology, timeline, and lab book
    • Preparation of project reports and manuscripts for publication
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or related discipline
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.  

Intermediate Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or related discipline
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • One (1) year professional level research experience

Senior Level

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or related discipline
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.
  • Two (2) years professional level research experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in a basic science laboratory.
  • Experience with mouse handling, drug delivery techniques, breeding, and dissection/necropsy.
  • Experience with cell/tissue culture.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques including RNA isolation and qPCR.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent communication, both in writing and orally, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment within the research lab on techniques and methods.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.
  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Organizational skills, ability to problem-solve, multi-task, and work independently.
  • Availability to work occasional weekends (rare).

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as

Entry: $45,000 - $57,240

Intermediate: $48,970 - $62,290

Senior: $52,941 - $67,341

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
