Job Summary

The University of Utah is recruiting a laboratory specialist to assist in the daily operation of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility. This facility provides cell-sorting and analysis services to more than 80 different internal and external investigators with over 600 individual users.
The HSC Flow Cytometry Core Facility is a full service, state of the art lab. We offer the complete spectrum of cytometric solutions from consultation to report generation. We are currently staffed with 3 full time employees. This level of staffing allows us to accommodate training and sample prep services in an extremely timely manner. Whereas many Flow Cores simply provide access to instrumentation, our facility has a long history of supporting any level of drop off services that generally include panel design, sample prep, data acquisition and report generation.

The Flow Cytometry Core Facility also provides cutting edge instrumentation. The Flow Core manages a total of 19 instruments spread across the campus. These instruments encompass multiple vendors and platforms ranging from 8 to 30+ color capabilities as well as imaging cytometers. Instruments provided include: BD Fortessa, BD Canto, BD FACSAria, Propel Avalon, Cytek Aurora, Amnis Imagestream, Beckman Coulter Cytoflex.

We operate a very fluid environment. In order to accommodate all the projects and tasks that need to be completed on a daily basis, everyone essentially gets involved on virtually all projects. This will include a strong emphasis on cell sorting and instrumentation knowledge. But will also entail a constant education of immunology and related biological disciplines.

This position is considered Category I: Mandatory and required on campus or health care facilities to support on-site operations. Employees hired into this category will be required to be physically located at HSC Core Research Facility if they are healthy and without COVID-19 symptoms.


• Performs daily calibration, operation, startup and shutdown, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of all sorters and analyzers.
• Sample Prep including immunophenotyping
• Performs low, medium, and high-speed bulk and custom multi-parameter cell sorting of various cell lines and cell types from murine and human tissue/organs.
• Weekly cleaning and organization of all analyzer rooms and main sorter rooms.
• Assists facility users in multi-parameter data acquisition and analysis using various software including: Diva, SpectroFlow, FlowJo
• Provides assistance to new and existing facility users regarding instrument operation, panel design, experiment troubleshooting, and data analysis
• Restock and order lab supplies and reagents
• Communicate effectively with other team members and facility users

4. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
5. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
6. May supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
7. Orders supplies and experimental materials needed to conduct research.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
