Job Summary
As part of the Department of Surgery Administrative and Financial team, this position will be instrumental in developing and implementing policies, programs and financial objectives for the Department and its ten Divisions in relation to accounting and finance functions, including (but not limited to) financial analysis and reporting, general accounting, payroll, and cost accounting.
Participates in preparing department budgets and enacting Department and Division goals.
Academic research financial management will be a major area of responsibility for this position.
Responsibilities
1. In coordination with the Administrative Director and members of the Administrative and Financial Team, develops plans and implements financial objectives for assigned Divisions consistent with the University’s goals and objectives.
2. Significant efforts in preparation and analysis of financial data and reporting of financial and operational information to team, Department, and Divisions.
3. Brings creativity, motivation, flexibility, and strong work ethic.
4. Develops and manages Divisions’ budgets, projects budgetary requirements for special projects and initiatives.
5. Establishes good working relationships with Department Chair, Division Chiefs, Faculty and Staff for assigned divisions.
6. Understands the clinical operations, management, and financial components of assigned divisions.
7. In coordination with the research director and other financial team members, develops and manages research budgets for internal and external funding.
8. Coordinates the month-end financial management process , including but not limited to journal entry processing, reconciliations, and reporting.
9. Implements and administers new and existing Department/Division programs and services to internal and external customers. Evaluates program effectiveness.
10. Participates in the development and interpretation of Department/Division polices to ensure compliance with the University’s policies and regulatory requirements. Ensures compliance with Federal and state regulations.
11. Establishes internal objectives and implements procedures to meet goals. Assists in setting Department/Divisions short and long-term goals.
12. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative relationships with the divisions, SOM Dean’s Office, SVPHS Office, University Hospital, and other departments.
13. Serves as part of the Department Administrative and Financial Team.

The problems and solutions encountered by this position vary depending on the area and structure of the department. This position frequently addresses problematic situations and often acts a mediator or a negotiator. A major task for this position is to understand the needs of individuals and determine what products and services should be provided to meet those needs.
Comments
The incumbent must be proficient in making daily operational decisions in assigned areas to ensure compliance of current regulations and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, Accounting, Finance or related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and four years of progressively more responsible management analyst experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Preferences
Previous work experience in an academic health care setting.
Previous work experience in an academic medical school setting.
Master’s degree in Business Administration or related area.
Adaptable to the “continuum of change” in the health care environment.
