Financial Aid Manager


Job Description

The Financial Aid Manager provides directional planning, staff evaluation and long and short-term goal setting for the Financial Aid and Scholarship Services office at the Tempe Campus.  Works with the Director and Associate Director to ensure overall management of Frontline Services.  Works with Associate Director to handle responsibilities of hiring, training, supervision and allocation of work assignments for the Frontline Services staff, as well as student worker staff.  Interprets federal regulations, guidelines and professional literature on financial aid and informs financial aid staff of changes, modifications and interpretations resulting from new or current legislation.  In conjunction with Associate Director, plans for and ensures efficient operation of mail, e-mail, phone and walk-in student traffic.  Prepares information and presents at meetings, discussion groups or workshops for students, parents, community organizations and/or other outside agencies.  Counsels and advises students about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, indebtedness, money management and financial planning and individualizes information to the particular needs of students.  Works in conjunction with Associate Director to plan, implement and maintain an effective process for receiving and addressing student concerns and appeals.  Reviews and analyzes financial aid applications referred by staff to identify solutions and maintain eligibility.

Essential Duties

  • Provides supervision and direction to other professionals in financial aid by keeping them informed of changes in legislation, establishing new procedures and/or policies to deal with changes. 
  • Participates in the planning, goal setting, and evaluation of the financial aid process and operation of the areas of the Student Financial Assistance Office. 
  • Reviews and recommends changes and/or implementation of departmental policies and procedures to increase efficiency of operations and to meet changing regulations requirements. 
  • Serves as liaison between all university departments and the financial aid office to coordinate policies and guidelines pertaining to financial aid. 
  • Interprets federal regulations, guidelines and professional literature on financial aid and informs financial aid staff of changes, modifications and interpretations resulting from new or current legislation. 
  • Compiles budgetary and statistical reports regarding financial aid to recommend equipment, supplies, staffing and to report on current activities of function. 
  • Reviews and analyzes difficult financial aid applications referred by subordinate staff to determine best solution and decide eligibility for award. 
  • Prepares information and presents at meetings, discussion groups or workshops for students, parents, staff, community organizations and/or outside agencies.
  • Assists with the development of office publications and correspondence. 
  • Assists in the design, testing and implementation of all computer systems applications and quality control procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or a related field AND six years of financial aid or related experience, which includes one year supervisory experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial aid processing systems (PeopleSoft);
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state financial assistance programs;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of enrollment management and staff services
  • Experience in working in a higher education financial aid office;
  • Evidence of effective communication skills;
  • Customer service experience;
  • Experience in supervising and training staff;
  • Experience creating and presenting financial aid information to diverse groups;
  • Experience using Microsoft applications (e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook) and using the internet.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Services is one of several departments comprising Academic Enterprise Enrollment which utilizes a variety of strategies to enroll and support a diverse student population representative of Arizona State University's vision.  The Financial Aid and Scholarship Services unit strives to provide excellent customer service with the goal to make each student's application for financial aid a simple and affordable process.  Each staff member is committed to helping a student finance their education by effectively utilizing scholarships, grants, work-study and loans.  The unit provides tools to help determine the cost of attending ASU, including a scholarship portal to search for available scholarships.  The department also provides resources for student to use to budget their money and a student employment unit which processes department requests for student workers.
