Faculty Position in Financial and Organizational Management

The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a faculty position in Financial and Organizational Management. The successful candidate will join the College as part of the new Cornell Center for Veterinary Business and Entrepreneurship, established in 2019 to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and problem-solving to advance the veterinary profession.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Today’s veterinary medical graduates must be competent in a wide range of professional skills to operate successfully in increasingly competitive business landscapes and more complex organizational structures. As the profession continues to diversify to fill vital roles in society, there is a growing need to teach business, organizational management, and entrepreneurship competencies to augment traditional scientific and clinical training. The successful candidate will lead a new transformative program to implement financial and organizational management competencies within college curricula. The goal of this new program is to help students develop an innovative, creative mindset and to equip graduates with professional competencies that will sustain a lifetime of career success.

The primary responsibilities of the position are to design and deliver interactive learning experiences in existing core courses, as well as develop elective courses for the new Certificate of Veterinary Business Management. Student learning outcomes are expected to address topics in practice management (e.g., personnel management, financial management, business performance analysis, sales and marketing, and legal-regulatory compliance), as well as veterinary innovation (e.g., emerging and disruptive technologies and service models). The candidate will be expected to develop effective collaborations with a variety of stakeholders including faculty in the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, industry, start-up businesses, and alumni in order to achieve the educational goals of the program.

The successful candidate will also play a key role in the establishment of the new Cornell Center for Veterinary Business and Entrepreneurship. As a member of the Center’s leadership team, the candidate will work to establish a solid foundation to support future programmatic excellence through strategic planning, corporate and alumni engagement, and fundraising activities.

OPPORTUNITIES: Cornell has a long history of successful interdisciplinary collaboration. The new Cornell Center for Veterinary Business and Entrepreneurship is a partnership between Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine and Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. The Center brings together top-ranked programs in veterinary medicine, applied economics and management, hotel administration, and graduate business to explore new business opportunities in veterinary medicine and to solve some of the most pressing challenges facing animal healthcare. The Center will focus efforts on four strategic areas: education, veterinary economics research, entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship.

The College of Veterinary Medicine includes 607 students (425 doctor of veterinary medicine, 140 graduate, and 42 Master of Public Health), 208 faculty, and 596 staff. Innovative, student-centered curricula are delivered in a $91.5 million state-of-the art educational facility opened in 2018. As part of a new forward-thinking DVM curriculum, financial and organizational management competency training will be integrated throughout the core and elective curriculum, including a new Certificate of Veterinary Business Management. Financial and organizational management competencies will also be implemented into the Biomedical and Biological Sciences graduate program and the Master of Public Health program. The objective of this college-wide effort is to equip graduates with transferrable professional skills that will enable flexibility and support long-term career growth. In keeping with the College’s long history of student-centered-learning, the financial and organizational management competencies will be delivered through a combination of didactic lectures, scenario-based exercises, and experiential learning opportunities.

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business encompasses three programs functionally organized under one college resulting in one of the largest business programs in the United States. It includes 3,200 students, over 200 faculty, over 500 staff, and 36,000 alumni. Areas of faculty expertise include: food and agricultural economics; environmental, energy and resource economics; international and development economics, finance, marketing, strategy, entrepreneurship, and management. Interdisciplinary collaboration is embraced by faculty members and supported through a variety of initiatives across campus that intersect with veterinary medicine such as the Institute for Social Sciences and the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

·         MBA, DVM, MD, PhD in Business Management, or other relevant degree

·         Experience in veterinary or other healthcare business management

·         Demonstrated leadership skills

Preferred:

·         Certificate of Veterinary Practice Management

·         Teaching experience
