Department Description

The School of Veterinary Medicine is an internationally top-ranked veterinary school with a mission of teaching, research, and service benefiting animal, human, and environmental health. The School’s Fiscal Administration unit is one of eleven major functional areas within the Vet Med Dean’s Office and reports to the Executive Assistant Dean for Administration. The School includes approximately 25 organized units with approximately 2090 faculty and staff and 600 students. It has annual operating expenditures of approximately $300 million and many different funding sources, including State funds and tuition, Agricultural Experimentation funds, Cooperative Extension funds, Federal funds, private gifts and grants, State contracts, endowments, self-supporting funds, reserve funds, professional student fees, and course material fee funds.

The School of Veterinary Medicine Dean’s office serves as the administrative arm for the School with 11 functional units including academic personnel, student admissions and programs, professional education, graduate education and research, advancement and communications, global programs, executive administration, information technology, facilities and safety, continuing education, and fiscal administration. The VMDO has a $20M budget and has 130 administrators and staff members.



Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Executive Assistant Dean for Administration, the Dean’s office Financial Operations Manager advises the 11 units within the Dean’s office on financial strategy, budget development, forecasting, and campus, federal, and state policies and procedures. Ensures the 11 units within the Dean’s office remain financially solvent. Provides advice on program and proposal development. Provide lead direction to the financial operations analyst within the Fiscal Administration unit to support and advise on the Dean’s office finances (over $20M operating budget). Oversees the endowments (market value of $275M+) that reside in the Dean’s office and provides reporting and advice on financial management of school-wide endowments to ensure solvency and appropriate usage of earnings. Provide financial planning and analysis for school-wide capital projects (up to $200M in capital projects annually).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business, or related field and/or equivalent experience.

·       Demonstrated experience with financial management, planning, and forecasting. Experience interpreting and applying policies and procedures. Demonstrated ability to establish internal controls to minimize financial risk to organization.

·       Demonstrated experience directing the work of individual(s) in the finance or related field. Experience with managing expectations regarding work products, workplan development, and interpersonal relationships to ensure a highly functioning unit.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Demonstrated interpersonal skills to communicate effectively across organizational levels and with individuals of diverse backgrounds.

·       Demonstrated ability to develop presentations and to deliver presentations orally and in writing to groups of faculty, administrators, and staff members.

·       Demonstrated ability to use spreadsheet and database tools to collect and summarize financial information through data manipulation and reporting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience performing financial analysis in a higher education environment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Familiar with financial policies and practices of a higher education environment.

·       Demonstrated understanding of the operations of academic school or college within a higher education environment.
