About the Department
 

The Integrated Microscopy Facility (IMF) is a supervised, user-based Shared Resource providing state-of-the-art microscopy imaging capabilities University investigators. The IMF offers all major wide-field and confocal microscopy instrumentation, in addition to super-resolution technologies (e.g., stimulated emission depletion (STED, localization, structured light). The major objective of the IMF is to provide imaging expertise and instrumentation to advance investigator-driven basic and translational cancer research at the University of Chicago.


Job Summary
 

The job leads and provides expertise to the development of programs for scientific research facilities. Uses considerable on-the-job experience to ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies. Works independently to write articles, reports and manuscripts, and presents research findings at meetings and/or conferences.
The Director of the Integrated Microscopy facility is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the core including ensuring proper training of users, management of core staff, maintenance of equipment, and staying on top of the latest advancements in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees all aspects of the operations for the core facility in collaboration with the Faculty Director.

  • Provide scientific expertise and leadership when training users on the microscopes within the core.

  • Manage the overall core financials, participating in bi-annual meetings with the Office of Shared Resource Facilities staff.

  • Review rates on an annual basis, balancing the need to cover costs with the price elasticity of users.

  • Ensure equipment is maintained, coordinating preventative maintenance when necessary. Regularly review the most recent literature to stay knowledgeable of the latest trends and technology in the industry; coordinate demos with vendors for users to test the latest technology.

  • Actively seek out grant funding opportunities to upgrade or replace technology within the core; provide letters of support for user grant applications.

  • On an annual basis, write update reports for the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center grant.

  • Collect billing data from the microscopes, format data, and submit for invoicing on a monthly basis.

  • Support users with data analysis and data analysis questions.

  • Act as the lab safety officer.

  • Responsible for overseeing management of core staff.

  • Provides expertise to researchers and research support staff. Oversees activities related to data collection and analysis.

  • Leads the establishment of new laboratories and provides assistance with purchasing new laboratory equipment; ensuring efficient operation of laboratory, including overseeing maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.

  • Improves financial, personnel, planning, compliance and other administrative aspects of research project. Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plans for research projects. Leads, investigates, modifies and applies new procedures, techniques or applications of technology. Establishes goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:

  • Masters or PhD in related field.

Experience:

  • Experience with light microscopy imaging and/or image processing.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Interest in teaching, technical writing, and/or software programming (Java, Python).

  • Ability to analyze and understand complex issues.

  • Commitment to providing a high level of service and working in a team environment.

  • High degree of professionalism. Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
