Summary of Duties:

Perform custodial tasks to maintain the appearance, cleanliness, and care of facilities within an assigned area.

This position has an overnight schedule. The typical schedule is Sunday to Friday, either 8:00 PM - 4:30 AM or 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM.

Essential Duties:

Area Coverage Cleaning/Sanitizing & Trash/Recycle Dusting & Detailed Cleaning: 45%

  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms/shower rooms and fixtures in accordance with established procedures and standards: refill dispensers; remove trash. 
  • Cleans, disinfects, and polishes drinking fountains and sinks. 
  • Cleans stainless steel and laminated walls in elevators. 
  • Removes recycled material and trash throughout entire assigned area. 
  • Dusts high ledges and ductwork as needed. 
  • Removes all visible dirt and fingerprints from desks, tables, furniture, chairs, counter tops, hand rails, etc., and from glass in doors, re-lights, windows. 
  • Uses and maintains assigned hand tools and equipment such as dust mops, brooms, wet mops, vacuums, custodial cart, squeegee, tucker pole, buffers, burnishers, scrubbers, wet vacuum, extractor, shampooer, ladders, and other related equipment. 
  • Cleans white boards and trays. 
  • Spot cleans walls, carpets, and upholstery as needed. 
  • Maintains assigned custodial room. 
  • Accesses and maintains other custodial rooms per work location, leaving rooms clean and orderly following use. 
  • Provides area coverage in absence of custodial staff or when extra coverage is needed. 
  • Reports any repairs and/or maintenance needed.

Floor Care: 40%

  • Vacuums carpeted areas to be free of dirt and debris: includes classrooms, offices, study areas, lounges, walk-off mats, conference rooms, elevators, and all other carpeted areas. 
  • Dusts mop/sweep all hard surface floors to be free of visible dirt and debris: includes classrooms, offices, study areas, lounges, studios, labs, lobbies, hallways, elevators, stairwells, and all other hard surface floors. 
  • Spot mops or completely wet mops all hard surface floors and stairwells as needed. 
  • Performs complete floor care as scheduled following established procedures. 
  • Sweeps, mops, strips, buffs, burnishes, and applies floor finish to various types of hard surface floors. 
  • Performs complete carpet and upholstery care as scheduled. 
  • Vacuums, bonnets, shampoos, extract carpets and upholstery following established procedures. 
  • Attends required training sessions.

Windows & Lighting, Entries, Event Setup/Move Furniture & Equipment: 10%

  • Cleans all common area windows as needed. Cleans all other interior windows annually. 
  • Cleans easily accessible exterior windows using squeegee or tucker pole. 
  • Performs cleaning and related activities outside the building using hand-operated tools or small power equipment. 
  • Removes snow, ice, or debris from walkways, stairs, ramps, and parking lots; sweep sidewalks or stairs. May spread sand and/or de-ice. 
  • Replaces burned out light tubes and bulbs including, but not limited to, fluorescent, compact fluorescent, metal halide, and incandescent as needed. 
  • Locks, unlocks, and secures buildings in accordance with established procedures.
  • Performs event setups as scheduled.
  • Sets up and takes down equipment such as podiums, easels, flags, coat racks, and furnishings including, but not limited to, chairs and tables needed for meetings, classrooms, conferences, and events. 
  • Moves furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools as requested.​

Other Duties: 5%

  • Performs related duties as required. 
  • May attend elective training.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 18.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively. 
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and proven ability to read and write in English. 
  • Six months of custodial experience.

Successful candidates have been pre-approved for appointment at Step E and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28 or applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.
