The School of Medicine at the University of Utah seeks qualified applicants to lead an academic Nephrology Division with an accomplished and dedicated faculty and ample opportunities for growth in the clinical, research, and educational missions. This is an exceptional position for an experienced academician who has aspirations to lead a vibrant Division.
The Division of Nephrology is one of 12 divisions within the Department of Internal Medicine. It is dedicated to delivering high-quality, value-driven patient care. Thirty-two nephrologists and nine advanced practitioners provide outpatient and inpatient services in multiple locations in Utah, Idaho and Nevada, including the University of Utah Hospital, the George E. Wahlen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, 16 other hospitals, and 16 community clinics. The Division faculty holds 20 medical directorships and provides chronic dialysis care at 25 dialysis centers. The Division serves a large geographic area in the Intermountain West with general nephrology clinics and sub-subspecialty clinics (Glomerulonephritis, Onco-nephrology, Hypertension, Kidney transplant, and Nephrolithiasis), The Division of Nephrology and Department of Internal Medicine have experienced consistent clinical growth for several years. The University of Utah is a Top-Tier 1 research university and member of the Association of American Universities. Research funding exceeded $640 million in 2021. Its research community is highly collaborative across 18 colleges, 35 interdisciplinary programs, and 100 academic departments and divisions. University Health Sciences Center provides access to state-of-the-art equipment and services through exceptional Core Facilities (see www.cores.utah.edu ) that enhance both discovery and translational science. The University of Utah also has a premier genetics program with ready access to a state-wide Utah Population Data Base.
The Department of Internal Medicine ranked 34 in NIH funding in 2021. The Nephrology Division has a strong research program and commitment to research excellence. In addition of physician-scientists, there are 5 PhD scientists leading independent research programs funded by the NIH, Veterans Affairs and other agencies. Major research emphases include, but are not limited to, kidney molecular physiology, chronic kidney disease, dialysis treatment, and hypertension. In accordance of the mission of the Department of Internal Medicine and the University of Utah, the Nephrology Division aims at expanding its research program and actively recruiting researchers. There will be abundant opportunities and resources to enhance and increase the Division’s research enterprise.
The Nephrology Division is also highly committed to the education of nephrology fellows, Internal Medicine house staff, PhD postdoctoral fellows and students. Attracting and training clinicians and researchers are integral to its education mission. The Division provides training to 4-5 fellows through a competitive, accredited Fellowship Program. The University of Utah offers excellent graduate programs for training PhD and MD/PhD students, and a Physician-Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in the Department of Internal Medicine. The Division is also committed to advancing junior faculty in conjunction with institutional research training programs, such as the Vice President’s Clinical and Translational (VPCAT) Research Scholar Program and the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) program.
The Chief will work closely with the Chair of Internal Medicine to promote a collaborative environment that enhances clinical growth, academic development, research and administrative/service missions consistent with Department and Institutional goals. She/he will develop the strategic vision for the Division that is aligned with that of the Department. Competitive candidates will have a track record of accomplishment as an academic nephrologist, as evidenced by practicing and excellence in clinical nephrology, original contributions to nephrology research, national and international visibility, a history of strong peer-reviewed research funding, and progressive leadership and administrative experience.

  • The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who promotes institutional stewardship throughout the University of Utah Health (U of U Heath) System.

Candidates should qualify for the appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level in the Tenure Line at the University of Utah, must be board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and must be eligible for a renewable medical license in the State of Utah.
