Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Associate Department Chair of the BA Psychology Program reports to the University Department Chair of the BA Psychology program for the curricular and assessment aspects of the program, with a dotted line to the Chicago campus leadership for the day-to-day operational aspects of the program.

Description:

The Associate Department Chair is a member of the faculty as an Administrative Faculty member and is responsible for scheduling courses and oversight of faculty for the program. In addition to department meetings, the Associate Chair participates in institutional committees, provides academic leadership, collaborates on Departmental projects and initiatives.

In addition to reporting to the University Department Chair, the Associate Chair works closely with the Chicago Campus Deans on the operational pieces including student recruitment, retention and engagement.

Principal Duties:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the department

  • Assist with scheduling and curriculum planning

  • Coordinate student development efforts (monitoring satisfactory academic progress, supervising Department efforts to support student development through Academic Development Plans and Professional Performance Evaluations, and representing the Department at institutional Student Affairs Committees)

  • Teach 9 credits per academic year

  • Participate in other departmental committees and duties as assigned by Department Chair

  • Outreach and recruit adjunct faculty

  • Mentor, supervise and evaluate the teaching, advisement, and other duties performed by Faculty members to meet program academic goals

  • Represent the Department at meetings, student events, and other related events.

  • Actively recruit students from area Community Colleges, businesses, and partners

  • Develop new partnerships

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Academic administration experience, teaching at the doctoral level, and professional experience is strongly desired.

  • The Associate Department Chair must be an optimistic, action-oriented leader who can motivate faculty to embrace these values in the classroom and within the institution

  • The Chicago School is an environment that expects high productivity and quick response time, as well as the ability to minimize operational tasks and maximize creativity and innovation. The Associate Department Chair must be able to balance institutional priorities with program needs and initiatives.

  • The Associate Chair must be able to support the Department Chair in circumstances that may be unexpected.

Position Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Psychology required, Doctorate preferred

  • Academic administration experience, including teaching at the undergraduate level, and professional experience are strongly desired

  • Experience in faculty/staff development, supervision, and mentorship

  • Commitment to the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse faculty body

  • Experience in development of academic partnerships a plus

  • Experience advocating for the learning needs of diverse students and innovative teaching strategies

  • Academic advising experience a plus

  • Excellent leadership, communication, team, and human relations skills
