The Waksman Institute at Rutgers University seeks an outstanding scientist to fill a new tenure-track faculty position in Plant Biology at the Assistant Professor level, with a tentative starting date of September 1, 2020. The academic appointment will be in the Department of Plant Biology within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers.

We are seeking an individual with research interests that complement and expand our existing strengths, including genetics, molecular and developmental biology, cell biology and genomics.

The successful candidate at the Waksman Institute at Rutgers University has a multitude of responsibilities in the areas of teaching, service, and scholarship. Tenure-track faculty are expected to develop a substantial, internationally-recognized, externally-funded program of scholarship that can withstand review from faculty at peer institutions. The Institute expects that tenure track faculty will spend a significant amount of time pursuing and participating in scholarly activities. Candidates are also expected to develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and participate in local and external service activities.

Minimum Education and Experience

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree, a demonstrated record of significant research accomplishments and the potential to make substantial contributions as an independent investigator.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

SCHOLARSHIP:
The Institute relies upon tenure-track faculty for support through extramural funding and for national and international recognition through outstanding scholarship. The Institute expects that individual faculty will pursue the discovery, integration, and application of knowledge in the biological and biomedical sciences. It is also expected that tenure-track faculty will aggressively pursue extramural funding for scholarly activities as well as publish in peer-reviewed journals. Examples of desired Scholarly activities include:
• Peer-reviewed publications and original research articles
• Pursuing and/or obtaining extramural funding for scholarly activities
• Invited presentations at state, regional, national, or international research symposia
• Review articles
• Serving as a manuscript reviewer for peer-reviewed publication

TEACHING:
This Tenure-track faculty position at the Waksman Institute will have a dual appointment in the Plant Biology Department, within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) at Rutgers. Faculty are expected to provide teaching effort consistent with their salary distribution from the SEBS, typically 15 didactic lectures during the 9-month academic year. Teaching responsibilities are at the discretion of the SEBS Department Chair. Specific responsibilities may include.
• Coordination or Co-coordination of team taught courses
• Provision of lectures in team taught courses. This responsibility includes providing appropriate exam questions covering the material taught in a timely manner and proctoring exams when needed
• When appropriate, provision of a single instructor course (Serving as coordinator and lecturer)

SERVICE:
Tenure-track faculty are expected to provide service to the Institute, their department within SEBS and the University at large. They are also expected to provide professional, extramural service within their specific scholarly discipline. Responsibilities include:
• Serving as a member, secretary or other officer on committees within the Institute, their department within the SEBS, and the University at large
• Participation in graduation ceremonies when assigned.
• Participation in Local, State and National Professional Organizations.
• Provision of Community service.

Promotion and Tenure
The awarding of tenure and the promotion from Assistant to Associate Professor will occur according to the guidelines set-forth in the University’s guidelines; however, for tenure track faculty, the greatest emphasis will be placed in the areas of teaching and scholarly activities.

Work Assignments
The relative weight of the individual’s expected contributions to teaching, service and scholarship will be determined based on the skills of the individual, external funding obtained, available university resources, and the needs of the University at any point in time.
